A Different Kind of School Summary in English
The Chapter “A Different Kind of School” has been written by E.V. Lucas, is a story of a school where children are taught to be kind to others and be responsible citizens in the future. The school was run by Miss Beam. The writer had heard a lot about this school and the teaching methods used by Miss Beam.
He wanted to visit the school and see it himself so he visited Miss Beam’s school. As the writer entered the school a saw a young boy of about 8 years leading a girl of about 12 years carefully between the flower beds having eyes covered with a bandage.
The author met Miss Beam in the school and found her as he expected her to be. She was a middle-aged, authoritative, kind, and understanding woman. The author asked a few questions about her teaching methods. She told him that the method used for teaching was quite simple.
She said. “The real aim of this school is not to teach thoughts as to teach thoughtfulness – kindness to others and being responsible citizens”. She asked the author to look out of the window for a minute. After a while, Miss Beam asked the author what he saw.
The author looked out of the window and saw beautiful grounds and so of happy children but he was a little pained when he saw some blind and crippled children. He saw two more girls with their eyes bandaged. Then, there was the third with a crutch watching others at play.
The author was surprised when Miss Beam told him that all these blind and crippled-looking children were perfectly alright and it is part of their education system. They were just acting to be like that.
He told the author that it was part of their teaching system and it is done to make them understand and appreciate the misfortunes. We make the children share in their misfortunes. Each term every child has one blind day, one lame day, one deaf day, one injured day, and one dumb day.
Miss Beam led the narrator to one of the bandaged girls and left him with her for a talk. The bandaged girl told the author that the blind day was the hardest and she felt that she was going to be hit every moment. The writer led the girl for a short walk and he became her helper in this walk describing things and places to her. After this short walk author found that describing things to someone was more interesting and made him a thoughtful and keen observer.
Finally, the author told Miss Beam that he was very impressed by her school and the teaching methods used in the school and was sorry to leave her school. Miss Beam was very happy to know that her system of teaching was effective and useful.
