Poem 1 A Nation’s Strength (By Ralph Waldo Emerson)
What makes a nation’s pillars high?
And its foundations strong?
What makes it mighty defy
The foes that round it throng?
It is not gold. Its kingdoms grand
Go down in battle shock;
Its shafts are laid on sinking sand,
Not on abiding rock.
Is it the sword? Ask the dust
Of empires passed away;
The blood has turned their stones to rust,
Their glory to decay.
And is it pride? Ah, that bright crown
Has seemed to nations sweet;
But God has struck its luster down
In ashes at his feet.
Not gold but only men can make
A people great and strong;
Men who for truth and honour’s sake
Stand fast and suffer long.
Brave men who work while others sleep,
Who dare while others fly…
They build a nation’s pillars deep
And lift them to the sky.

Summary of the Poem A Nation’s Strength in English
The poem ‘A Nation’s Strength’ is written by American poet Ralph Waldo Emerson. The poet asks some questions himself about what makes a nation strong and prosperous. The poet answers the same questions in his way. He says that gold cannot make the nation’s pillars strong. He said it is not wealth that makes a nation great. He said that a kingdom dependent on wealth collapsed because its foundations were in sinking sand that did not offer rock-solid support.
Then he spoke of arrogance and destroying this element with hatred. He said that nations that considered themselves (filled with pride in their glory) turned to ordinary dust and ashes when God’s wrath swept over them.
The poet says that it’s the people of a nation and not its wealth, gold, jewels etc that make it strong. He said brave people who dare to suffer for their nation stand firm and determined.
He said when people are slow to sleep, these brave people work and face opportunities while cowards run away. He says that it is brave men who work hard while others sleep and who stand fast while others fly away. These brave men make the nation great and built its deep and lift them to the height of the sky. These are the people who lay the deep and solid foundation on which a great nation can stand.

Let’s Write
What are the things that make a nation strong in the present times? Sum up your idea in a brief paragraph.
Ans. In the present time, if we remain united, nobody can harm us. There are people of different religions and castes living in our nation. They speak different languages and belong to different races, castes, colours and creeds. However, no one can defeat a nation in which all citizens have equal respect for each other.
People should have love, truth, honesty and bravery. They must die for the sake of their nation’s respect. All the people of a nation should be made to realise what they are doing for their country and not what the country is doing for them.
