Once there lived a wrestler named Vijay Singh in a village. He was very strong and everyone used to believe that he was unbeatable but he had one weakness of boasting. It used to land him in a tricky situation. One day he boasted that he was not afraid of ghosts and wanted to meet one to teach him a lesson.
He boasted to visit the Haunted Desert. It was believed that the place had ghosts. Vijay Singh decided to go there and fight one of them. The whole village came to bid farewell to him. An old woman gave him a small packet before he left for the desert. Before he reached his destination he opened the packet given by the woman which had an egg and a lump of salt.
Just when Vijay Singh entered the Haunted Desert he heard someone calling his name. He claimed to be Vijay’s friend Natwar. Vijay Singh understood that he was not his friend but a ghost. He was scared but he hid his fear. He insulted the ghost in his face and told him that he wanted to meet a ghost and have a fight with him. The ghost tried to horrify him with his looks but Vijay Singh replied was not horrified by him. He befooled the ghost cunningly.
Vijay Singh picked up and handed a piece of rock to the ghost and asked him to squeeze the liquid out of it. The ghost was not able to do so and now it was Vijay Singh’s turn to break it. He cleverly took out the egg from his pocket and squeezed it along with the rock. The yellow yolk oozed out around the fingers. The breaking of the eggshell created the illusion of the rock being crushed. Vijay Singh again challenged the ghost to crush a rock to salt. The ghost could not do that. But Vijay Singh crushed what the ghost took to be a stone and crumbled the piece of salt that the old woman had given him.
Looking at the strength of Vijay Singh the ghost avoided wrestling with him. He decided to defeat him by cheating. Therefore, he invited Vijay Singh to be his guest for the night. Vijay Singh agreed to accompany the ghost but asked him to come with him as a prisoner the next day. The ghost agreed but silently vowed to kill Vijay Singh in the intervening night. He led him to his house in the cave. At midnight Vijay Singh placed a bolster in the centre of the bed and covered it with a bed sheet to make it look exactly like a sleeping man. After that, he slipped and hid in a dark corner.
Before the break of dawn, the ghost woke up at night took a stout club struck hard at what he thought was the wrestler’s head. He struck the bolster six times more to make sure that he had killed the wrestler. He was satisfied that Vijay Singh was dead, and he slipped into his bed.
When the ghost woke up in the morning he found Vijay Singh alive and was very scared of him. He fled from the cave leaving behind all the wealth he had accumulated after looting and killing people. Several camels were brought from the village to carry the property back to the village. Vijay Singh returned a major portion of the property to the rightful owners. He thanked the old woman for her gift and asked her for her granddaughter’s hand in marriage. After that incident, Vijay Singh was very careful about boasting.
