The man replied that he had to go to Delhi and he must be there before nightfall but he was very tired and would not be able to reach there on time. The Prince got off his horse offered him a ride and walked beside him as he did know the way to Delhi very well.
The man gladly rode the horse and when they reached city gates, Surya Singh asked him to get down. But the clever man refused to get off the horse and claimed that the horse belonged to him. Surya Singh was surprised and annoyed at his cleverness and took him to the judge, Birbal. He heard their story and asked both of them to leave the horse and come the next day for the verdict.
After both the man and Surya Singh had left Birbal asked his servant to free the horse after them to see which one of the two it followed. Birbal told the servant to bring it back and put it in the stable with other horses of the same size and colour.
The next day Birbal called Surya Singh and the traveller to the stable to claim their horse. The traveller got confused and could not recognise the horse but Surya Singh found and claimed his horse. The traveller was punished with fifty strokes of whip for robing Surya Singh. Summary of Birbal the Wise in Hindi
