Birbal the Wise Summary in English
Once Surya Singh, the prince of Manipur came to Delhi on a secret mission. He had not brought a single servant with him due to secrecy reasons. On the way he found a weak and tired looking man sitting on the roadside. He stopped his horse and enquired where the way he was going. The man replied that he had to go to Delhi and he must be there before nightfall but he was very tired and would not be able to reach there on time. The Prince got off his horse offered him a ride and walked beside him as he did know the way to Delhi very well.
The man gladly rode the horse and when they reached city gates, Surya Singh asked him to get down. But the clever man refused to get off the horse and claimed that the horse belonged to him. Surya Singh was surprised and annoyed at his cleverness and took him to the judge, Birbal. He heard their story and asked both of them to leave the horse and come the next day for the verdict.
After both the man and Surya Singh had left Birbal asked his servant to free the horse after them to see which one of the two it followed. Birbal told the servant to bring it back and put it in the stable with other horses of the same size and colour.
The next day Birbal called Surya Singh and the traveller to the stable to claim their horse. The traveller got confused and could not recognise the horse but Surya Singh found and claimed his horse. The traveller was punished with fifty strokes of whip for robing Surya Singh. Birbal welcomed the prince of Manipur to Delhi and told Surya Singh that the state had arranged for his stay there, Surya Singh was surprised to know that Birbal knew about his secret mission and he was greatly impressed by his wisdom.
Surya Singh asked Birbal about how he decided the judgement of his case. Birbal told him that he already knew him and was sure that he was telling truth. Birbal told Surya Singh that his servant followed both of them with the horse and when it was set free, it went after him, not the traveller, also the traveller could not identify the horse in the stable. The prince was impressed by Birbal’s wisdom.
