The picture above is of Lieutenant Commander, Wahida Prism, a Doctor in the Indian Navy. She is one of the few women that worked on a naval ship and became the first woman to lead the annual parade at Armed Forces Medical College Pune in 2006. Question 1 was about Wahida’s childhood and school.
Wahida comes from a small village named Thannamandi in the Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir. She did her schooling up to 10th from her native village but completed her 12th from Rajouri. She wanted to be different since her childhood.
Question 2 was whether her thinking to be different since her childhood.
She told that always wanted to do something different from a young age. She was fond of riding a motorcycle. They are three sisters and their father wanted one of them to be a doctor, one to be a teacher and the third one to be a lawyer or join the police force. And at present, she has become a doctor in the Indian Navy and one of her sisters is Jammu Police force.
Question 3 was how she became a doctor.
She said that she worked very hard and was fully supported by his friends and family members. She got admission to Jammu Medical College and studied for five years and completed her M.B.B.S.
Question 4 was about how she got into the Defence Forces. Didn’t her family stop her?
She answered that her family wanted her to join the forces. She told that when she was very young, she would see army officers in her village. She wanted to be like them. That was a big dream for her at that time. When she was in school, she attended camps, climbed mountains and was a “Girl Guide”. After she became a doctor, she appeared in an interview to join the Armed forces. She got selected and trained for six months.
Question 5 was why she decided to join Indian Navy as she had to live on the naval ship for months.
Wahida is very fond of travelling and likes to visit and see different places. There are very few lady officers who worked on the naval ship and she is one of them. Earlier women were not allowed to work on naval ships but when she got an opportunity grabbed it with both hands. She said she wanted to do everything that people think women cannot do. Presently women are not allowed in a submarine but whenever it is allowed, she certainly wants to go in a submarine.
Question 6 was what happened to her M.B.B.S degree as she joined the Navy.
She said that she is a doctor on the naval ship. A naval doctor does not look at patients and prescribe medicines, he/she is a medical officer of the naval ship. The ship goes to sea for 3-4 months at a time and during that period it is her responsibility to look after the health and fitness of every officer and sailor on the ship. She carries out health check-ups of all officers and sailors on the ship. She also ensures the cleanliness of the ship ensures that no garbage is accumulated on the ship also ensures that there are no rats on the ship. She also trains and keeps everybody on the ship ready for any sort of emergency.
Question 7 was whether there is a hospital on the ship or not.
She answered that there was only a necessary first aid facility on the ship. Each ship has one doctor and two or three assistants.
Question 8 was about how she became the first woman to lead a parade.
She answered that she was selected for this based on her performances for three years.
Question 9 was to tell more about the annual parade.
She answered that in the annual parade, four platoons march behind a leader. There are 36 commands to be given in the entire parade. These commands must be given in a very loud voice because they should reach the rear end of the parade and the spectators.
Question 10 was whether she feel nervous while leading the four platoons.
She answered that she was not nervous because she had practised for a month and she also used to participate in parades since her school days.
Question 11 was the last question in which she was asked about the word ‘Prism’ in her name.
She told that this name was given to her by her father because prim is a kind of glass which reflects light into seven colours and her father wanted her to be like a prism.
