From the Pied Piper of Hamelin Class 5th Summary in English
This poem is taken from a longer poem that narrates a story of how a piper by the magical power of his music made all the rats of a town follow him and then he took them to river Weser and had them drowned in it.
There was a small-town Hamelin near the Weser which was once full of rats. They ate all the food, troubled sleeping babies, and made a lot of noise. The people had gotten tired of the rats but were unable to do anything to control the menace of rats.
The Mayor of the town discussed the matter with his attorney and a magician named Pied Piper was invited. He was having bright twinkling blue eyes and was wearing a long coat that was half yellow, half red. He said he had a hidden charm and he had overcome several such menaces in many countries. He went to the Mayor and said, “What will you pay me if I free your town of every single rat?” The Mayor offered to pay him one thousand guilders.
Pied Piper was satisfied with the offer. He walked into the street and started playing his pipe. As the rats heard the shrill note of his pipe, all rats of the town came out and started following him. The Pied Piper kept on playing his pipe and the rats followed him. All types of rats followed him and the piper walked up to the river Weser with millions of rats behind him. He led them into the water and every rat had drowned except one.
Only one fat rat swam across the river and went into another island. This rat is like Julius Caesar. He swam across the river and told all the other rats about Piper’s way and his songs. The rat warned the other rats to be careful about the Piper. Now the town was free of the rats and the people were happy.
After all the rats were killed, everyone in the town became happy. The Pied Piper returned and asked the Mayor for the money as promised. The Mayor said that he could give him fifty guilders only for such an easy job. The piper got furious over this and decided to teach the Mayor a lesson. He took out his pipe and played a different tune. Hearing his music, all the children of the town came out of their houses. They started following the piper, dancing and shouting. The piper led the children to the side of the mountains and disappeared from there with the children.
The parents of the children started crying. They went to the Mayor but the Mayor said he was helpless. He knew that he had been dishonest with the piper. The Pied Piper along with the children disappeared from the side of the mountain and never came back.
