Julius Caesar was a great soldier and leader of Rome. He was famous all over Europe because he expanded the Roman Empire. He was a great conqueror and was admired by the people of Rome as a national hero. There was a man named Brutus living in Rome at that time. He was Caesar’s dearest friend. He watched Caesar’s growing ambition with great anxiety and was troubled with his growing importance.
Brutus and his brother-in-law Cassius were expecting Caesar might be offered the crown at the National Games. Cassius was among the group of people who did not want Caesar to be the king of Rome. He persuaded Brutus (Caesar’s dearest friend) to join their group and be their leader.
He poisoned Brutus against Caesar. Casca, another member of Cassius’s party was at the games. He told the members that Mark Antony has offered him the crown thrice and was refused by Caesar but he was slower in doing so. He was sure that if he was offered the crown one more time he would not refuse it. Brutus also joined the group Cassius and finally, they decided to kill Caesar the very next day.
At midnight Cassius, Casca, Decius and the other members of their group went secretly to meet Brutus. They discussed the plan to kill the Caesar next day in the town hall where he was going to make a speech to the people. They also wanted to kill Mark Antony but Brutus was against it because he was like his right hand. Brutus was reluctant to kill Caesar but the other members of the group provoked him and they decided to kill Caesar.
The next day the weather was very bad outside. It was raining lightning and thunder outside all night. Caesar’s wife Calpurnia begged him not to go to the Capitol that day. She told him that she had a very frightening dream the previous night. She told Caesar that these were not good signs and that something wrong was going to happen to him that day.
Finally, Calpurnia convinces Caesar to stay at home. Cassius sent Decius to call him to the Capitol. When Calpurnia told him about the dream, he made fun of it and took Caesar with him to the Capitol.
Cassius and others killed Caesar in the Capitol in broad daylight. The killing of Caesar surprised the people of Rome and all of them were in fear and confusion. Brutus addressed the frightened people of Rome and explained to them the reason for killing Caesar. Mark Antony spoke in favour of Caesar and made people aware of the wicked plan of Cassius and Brutus to murder Caesar. After hearing this, the Romans raise their voices against the murderers of Caesar and wanted to take revenge.
Brutus and Cassius escaped to Greece. One year later, they were camped with their army at a place named Sardis. Antony and Octavius (another friend of Caesar) with their army were in the town Philippi few miles away from them.
Brutus wanted to march to Philippi and attack Mark Antony but Cassius was against it. Antony and Octavius had the advantage of a good defensive position and a well-rested army. Brutus said to Cassius that he would take his life if he will be on the verge of defeat in the battle.
At midday, it was almost sure that Mark Antony’s army was on the winning side. Both Cassius and Brutus killed themselves with their swords. Mark Antony felt great unhappiness at the death of Brutus. He said that he was a brave and honourable man.
