The play Macbeth revolves around the main character “Macbeth” who was told by the witches to be the King of Scotland. He murdered King Duncan to be the king but his greed for power and over-ambitious approach led to his downfall and he was finally killed by Macduff.

Ans. Macbeth was King Duncan’s General. He was named Thane of Glamis. He became the King of Scotland after killing King Duncan.

Look at this sentence:
The patient had been crying all night, but no one came to help him.
In the above sentence, the underlined words are in the past perfect continuous tense.
The tense in this sentence is used to indicate an action that began in the past and was completed in the past, but the emphasis is on the continuity of the action and time.
Now use the Past Perfect Continuous Tense of the verbs in brackets in the following sentences.

Write a few lines on the characters of Lady Macbeth and Macbeth.
Lady Macbeth: Lady Macbeth was braver than her husband. She wishes her husband to be in a good position. She prepares her husband to kill the King and escape being doubted. She told Macbeth that this is possible by smearing blood on the grooms. She is brutal, ambitious and cunning. It is she who prepares her husband to do the crime.
Macbeth: He is an ambitious man. He wanted to be the King. He depends on his wife for the plan to kill Duncan and get the throne. He is not prepared for the murder and but his wife persuaded him. He has not the courage to kill the king because he is not as brave as his wife. His craving and mad ambition lead to his defeat.
Macbeth Class 7 Line by Line Explanation
The play opens with the three witches who intend to meet Macbeth, Thane of Glamis.
Explanation: The play opens with the three witches’ plans to meet Macbeth who was Thane of Glamis.
Macbeth, King Duncan’s general and Banquo return victorious from war and encounter the three witches on a heath. They predict that Macbeth will be the king. To Banquo, they say, ‘Thou shalt get kings, though thou shall be none.’
Explanation: Macbeth King Duncan’s 1st general and Banquo King Duncan’s 2nd general were returning from their victorious campaign in the war when they met these three witches on barren land. The witches predict Macbeth to be the future king of Scotland while for Banquo they said Banquo’s descendants will be kings but not him.
The witches disappear before they could be questioned further. In the meantime, the king’s messengers arrive. Macbeth is to receive the title and possessions of Thane of Cawdor who has proved a traitor in the rebellion and is under sentence of death. Upon learning that he is the new Thane of Cawdor, Macbeth begins to entertain the idea that the witches’ words may prove true. Banquo observes that Macbeth is absorbed by the possibilities raised by the prophecy.
Explanation: Macbeth and Banquo wanted to ask more questions from witches before they could do so. At the same time, the messenger from King Duncan arrives and gives him news that is going to receive the title and possession of Thane of Cawdor who proved to be a betrayer in the war and is ordered the sentence to death. When Macbeth receives this news, he starts thinking that the witch’s prediction may come true. Banquo saw Macbeth thinking about the prediction made by witches.
Macbeth begins to contemplate Malcolm, the prince, as an obstacle to his succession as king.
Explanation: Macbeth starts thinking of Malcolm as an obstacle in the way of his becoming the new King of Scotland.
At Inverness, Lady Macbeth reads a letter from her husband in which he informs her of his encounter with the witches and their prediction of him becoming a king. Lady Macbeth is sure that prophecy will come true but objects to Macbeth’s being full of the milk of human kindness.
Explanation: Lady Macbeth read the letter sent by her husband at their castle in Inverness in which he tells her about his meeting with the witches and the prediction they made about him becoming the king of Scotland in future. Lady Macbeth was sure about the prediction but she was angry with his too kind behaviour towards the people.
She reinforces Macbeth’s belief that the crown could be achieved by the shortest route, that is, by killing the king too.
Explanation: She encourages Macbeth’s belief and suggested that he can become king quickly by murdering King Duncan.
The king is a guest at Macbeth’s castle, and now Macbeth thinks over the consequences of assassinating the King. He shares with his wife the fear of proceeding further. Lady Macbeth retorts by calling him a coward. She tells him about her plan and how they will shift the blame on the king’s grooms by smearing them with blood from the murder weapons.
Explanation: When Macbeth is titled Thane of Cawdor, the King visits Macbeth’s castle at Inverness. Macbeth’s wife asks him to assassinate the king. He thinks about the aftermath of murdering the king and shares his fear with his wife who gets angry with him and calls him a coward. The murder is discovered by Macduff. Malcolm and his younger brother Donalbain are uneasy when they learn that the only possible witnesses – the grooms are dead. Macbeth confesses that he has killed them in rage at their crime. The two princes escape from Scotland and Macbeth assumes the crown.
Explanation: Macduff comes to know about the murder and raised alarm. The princes Malcolm and Donalbain feel unsafe when they find that possible witnesses of the murder are also murdered. Macbeth accepts to have killed them in anger. The princes escaped from Scotland to save their lives and Macbeth becomes the new King of Scotland.
Macbeth now plans Banquo’s murder but is displeased about Fleance’s escape. The ghost of Banquo now haunts Macbeth. He seeks out the witches and learns that he must beware of the Thane of Fife (Macduff) but he cannot be harmed by one ‘of woman born and that he will not be defeated until ‘Birnam Wood… shall come against him.
Explanation: Macbeth becomes the King of Scotland but he remains uncertain about his power and position as he remembers the prediction about Banquo’s descendants becoming the king. He plans to kill Banquo and his son Fleance. Banquo gets killed but his son Fleance escapes and it makes him very angry. The ghost of Banquo starts haunting him and he went to the witches who tell him to remain beware of Macduff (Thane of Fife) and also tells him that he can’t get killed by any man born of a woman until the Birnam Wood come against him in the war.
Finally, he is granted a vision of a line of kings and the last of them wears Banquo’s face. Macduff joins Malcolm in England, where the prince is raising an army to invade Scotland. Macbeth orders the murder of Lady Macduff and all her children.
Explanation: At last, he dreams of a line of kings and the last among the line was Banquo. Macduff (Thane of Fife) joins the prince Malcolm in England who is raising an army there to invade and capture Scotland. When Macbeth gets the information, he orders the killing of Lady Macduff and her children and captures his castle.
Lady Macbeth’s mind gives way. She sleepwalks and speaks of ‘unnatural deeds’. Macbeth with the invading army approaching fortifies Dunsinace castle near Birnam Wood. It is there that Lady Macbeth dies, while the soldiers of Malcolm and Macduff use branches of the trees of Birnam Wood as camouflage for their assault on the castle. Macbeth’s forces are defeated but he, remembering the witches’ words, believes himself invulnerable. He is killed by Macduff, the opponent who was not ‘of woman born’ but ‘was from his mother’s womb’ untimely brought out. Malcolm succeeds on the throne.
Explanation: Lady Macbeth develops a disease of walking in sleep and speaking about evil deeds. Macbeth waits for the approaching army in his castle near the Birnam Wood at Dunsinace.
