Tansen Class 6 Summary in English
Tansen was one of the greatest musicians in our country. Tansen was the only son of Mukandan Misra and his wife who lived in Behat near Gwalior. He was very naughty in his childhood and used to run away to play in the forest. Soon he learnt to produce sounds like birds and animals.
Once a famous singer Swami Haridas and his disciples were travelling through the forest, and Tansen saw and frightened them by roaring like a lion. Swami Haridas found the boy very talented and decided to make him a good singer. After seeking permission from Tansen’s father he made him his disciple and started teaching him music.
Tansen was ten years old when he left his house for eleven years for learning music. He became a great singer in future. His parents died at that time. His father’s last wish was that Tansen should meet Mohammad Ghaus a holy man of Gwalior. So, he went to Gwalior and while living in with Mohammed Ghaus, Tansen was often taken to the court of Rani Mrignaini, who was a great musician herself. There he met and married one of the ladies of the court Hussaini. She also became the disciple of Swami Haridas.
After marriage, Tansen and Hussaini had five children and they were all fond of music. Tansen also sometimes used to sing in emperor Akbar’s court. The emperor was so impressed with Tansen that he asked him to join the court. After he joined the court, Tansen became a favourite in the emperor’s court. Looking at his popularity some of the courtiers became jealous of Tansen and planned to kill him. One of the courtiers, Shaukat Mian, suggested an idea to execute the plan to kill Tansen.
He suggested making Tansen sing Raga Deepak. He did so because he knew if Raga Deepak will be sung properly the air will be so hot and the singer will be burnt into ashes and they will get rid of him. So, Shaukat Mian requested Akbar to make Tansen Raga Deepak. Akbar asked Tansen to sing it. Although he was afraid he could not disobey the king and agreed to sing.
Tansen was very upset because he knew that the heat that Raga Deepak will give off will burn him into ashes. Then an idea struck his mind. He knew that if someone sings Raga Megha at the same time as he sings Raga Deepak, it will bring rain. He trained his daughter Saraswati and her friend Rupvatti to sing Raga Megha and told them to sing the Raga when lamps will start burning.
On the said day the whole town assembled at the court to hear Tansen sing Raga Deepak. When he started singing, the temperature of the air rose and soon people started sweating. Soon the leaves on the trees dried and fell to the ground, birds died due to heat and water starts boiling due to heat and people in the court were afraid when the lamps got alighted.
Just then Saraswati and Rupvatti started singing Raga Megha. It brought down rain and Tansen was saved but he fell very ill after the incident. The emperor Akbar punished the enemies of Tansen. After some time Tansen got well and people enjoyed his good health. He remained a singer in Akbar’s court till his death in 1585. He composed several new ragas. His tomb in Gwalior is a place of pilgrimage for singers and musicians.

तानसेन हमारे देश के महानतम संगीतकारों में से एक थे। तानसेन मुकंदन मिश्रा और उनकी पत्नी का इकलौता पुत्र था जो ग्वालियर के पास बेहट में रहते थे। वह बचपन में बहुत शरारती था और जंगल में खेलने के लिए भाग जाता था। जल्द ही उसने पक्षियों और जानवरों जैसी आवाज़ें निकालना सीख लिया।
एक बार एक प्रसिद्ध गायक स्वामी हरिदास और उनके शिष्य जंगल से यात्रा कर रहे थे, और तानसेन ने उन्हें देखा और शेर की तरह दहाड़ कर डरा दिया। स्वामी हरिदास ने लड़के को बहुत प्रतिभाशाली पाया और उसे एक अच्छा गायक बनाने का फैसला किया। तानसेन के पिता से अनुमति लेने के बाद उन्होंने उसे अपना शिष्य बना लिया और उसे संगीत सिखाना शुरू कर दिया।

तानसेन बहुत परेशान था क्योंकि वह जानता था कि राग दीपक जो गर्मी देगा वह उसे जलाकर राख कर देगा। तभी उसके दिमाग में एक विचार आया। वह जानता था कि जब वह राग दीपक गाता गायेगा अगर कोई उसी समय राग मेघ गाता है तो बारिश होगी। उन्होंने अपनी बेटी सरस्वती और उसकी सहेली रूपवती को राग मेघ गाने के लिए प्रशिक्षित किया और उनसे कहा कि जब दीपक जलना शुरू हो जाए तो राग गाएं।
उस दिन तानसेन के राग दीपक को सुनने के लिए पूरा शहर दरबार में इकट्ठा हुआ था। जब उन्होंने गाना शुरू किया तो हवा का तापमान बढ़ गया और जल्द ही लोगों के पसीने छूटने लगे। जल्द ही पेड़ों पर पत्ते सूख कर जमीन पर गिर गए, चिड़ियाँ गर्मी से मर गईं और गर्मी के कारण पानी उबलने लगा और दीये के जलने पर दरबार में लोग डर गए।
तभी सरस्वती और रूपवती ने राग मेघ गाना शुरू किया। इससे बारिश हुई और तानसेन बच गए लेकिन घटना के बाद वह बहुत बीमार पड़ गए। बादशाह अकबर ने तानसेन के शत्रुओं को दण्डित किया। कुछ समय बाद तानसेन ठीक हो गए और लोगों ने उनके अच्छे स्वास्थ्य का आनंद लिया। वह 1585 में अपनी मृत्यु तक अकबर के दरबार में गायक रहे। उन्होंने कई नए रागों की रचना की। ग्वालियर में उनका मकबरा गायकों और संगीतकारों का तीर्थ स्थान है।

A singer called Mukandan Misra and his wife lived in Behat near Gwalior. Tansen was their only child. It is said that he was a naughty child. Often, he ran away to play in the forest and soon learnt to imitate perfectly the calls of birds and animals.

‘Strangers in the forest!’ he said to himself. ‘It will be fun to frighten them. He hid behind a tree and roared like a tiger. The little group of travellers scattered in fear but Swami Haridas called them together. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Tigers are not always dangerous. Let us look for this one.”
Explanation: On seeing them in the forest Tansen said to himself that it would be fun to frighten them by imitating the voice of a tiger. He hid behind a tree and imitated the roar of a tiger. Hearing the roaring sound of the tiger, the travellers in the group ran here and there due to fear but Swami Haridas called them and asked them to sit together. He asked them not to be afraid because tigers were not always dangerous.
Suddenly, one of his men saw a small boy hiding behind a tree. “There are no tigers here, master,” he said. “Only this naughty boy.”
Explanation: Then all of a sudden one of the disciples of Swami Haridas found a small boy hiding the tree and imitating the roar of a tiger. He told others that there were no tigers in the forest but it was a little naughty boy copying the sound of a tiger.

Some of the courtiers became jealous of Tansen. “We shall never be able to rest till Tansen is ruined,” they declared. One of the courtiers, Shaukat Mian, had a bright idea.

“Let us make him sing Raga Deepak”, he said. “How will that help us?” asked another man. “If Raga Deepak is properly sung, it makes the air so hot that the singer is burnt to ashes. Tansen is a very good singer. If he sings Raga Deepak, he will die, and we will be rid of him.”
Explanation: The courtier suggested to made Tansen sing Raga Deepak. Another courtier asked how it would help their cause. He told him that if Raga Deepak would be sung properly it will make the air so hot that the singer would be burnt to ashes. He told them that Tansen was a very good singer and if he will sing Raga properly they will get rid of him.
Shaukat Mian went to Akbar and said, “We don’t think Tansen is a great singer. Let us test him. Tell him to sing Raga Deepak. Only the greatest singers can sing it properly.”
“Of course, he can sing it. Tansen can sing anything”. Akbar said. Tansen was afraid, but could not disobey the king. “Very well, my lord,” he said, “but give me time to prepare myself.” Tansen went home. He had never been more downcast and unhappy. “I can sing the Raga,” he told his wife, “but the heat it gives off will not only set the lamps alight, but it will also burn me to ashes.”
Explanation: The courtier named Shaukat Mian went to Akbar and said that they don’t think that Tansen was a great singer and that if he was a great singer the emperor should test him by asking him to sing Raga Deepak because only the greatest singers have the ability to sing the Raga.
Akbar was confident of Tansen and he told Shaukat Mian that Tansen can sing anything. Tansen was afraid to sing the Raga but he could not say no to the emperor and agreed to sing the Raga but asked him for some time to prepare himself for singing Raga. He went home but was very sad and unhappy. He told his wife the truth about singing the Raga. He said that he can sing that Raga but the heat that it produces will not only light the lamps in the court but will burn him to ashes.
Then he had an idea. “If someone sings Raga Megh at the same time, and sings it properly, it will bring rain. Perhaps our daughter, Saraswati, and her friend, Rupvati, could do it,” he said.
He taught the two girls to sing Raga Megh. They practised night and day for two weeks. Tansen told them, “You must wait till the lamps start burning, and then you start singing.”
Explanation: Then he thought of an idea that if someone would sing Raga Megh properly at the same time it would bring rain. He said that his daughter and her friend Rupvatti can do that.
He trained the girls to sing Raga Megh. They practised very hard to sing Raga Megh for two weeks. Tansen told the girls to start singing Raga Megh after the lamps start burning.

When he started singing the air becomes warm and people started feeling the heat and started sweating. The leaves of the trees got dried up and fell. The birds died and the water in the rivers started boiling. People started crying out of fear when the lamps started burning.
At once Saraswati and Rupvati began to sing Raga Megh. The sky clouded over and the rain came down. Tansen was saved. The story goes that he was very ill after this, and Akbar was sorry that he had caused him so much suffering. He punished Tansen’s enemies. When Tansen got well, the entire city rejoiced. Tansen remained Akbar’s court singer till 1585 when he died. He composed several new ragas. Tansen’s tomb is in Gwalior. It is a place of pilgrimage for musicians.
