Bangle-sellers are we who bear
Our shining loads to the temple fair…
Who will buy these delicate, bright
Rainbow-tinted circles of light?
Lustrous tokens of radiant lives
For happy daughters and happy wives.

Some are meet for a maiden’s wrist,
Silver and blue as the mountain mist,
Some are flushed like the buds that dream
On the tranquil brow of a woodland stream,
Some are aglow with the bloom that cleaves
To the limpid glory of newborn leaves

Some are like fields of sunlit corn,
Meet for a bride on her bridal morn,
Some, like the flame of her marriage fire,
Or, rich with the hue of her heart’s desire,
Tinkling, luminous, tender, and clear,
Like her bridal laughter and bridal tear.

Some are purple and gold flecked grey
For she who has journeyed through life midway,
Whose hands have cherished, whose love has blest,
And cradled fair sons on her faithful breast,
And serves her household in fruitful pride,
And worships the gods at her husband’s side.

The Bangle Sellers is written by Sarojini Naidu, The Nightingale of India. The poem is a description of a group of bangle sellers who are on their way to a temple fair to sell their bangles. the bangle-seller is the narrator of the poem. In the opening lines of the poem, the narrator describes the colour, lustre, and delicacy of the bangles. The bangles are termed as a symbol of love and happiness in people’s lives especially daughters and wives who feel happy to have them.

The poet says that some of these bangles are made for unmarried girls. Some bangles are silver and blue in colour and are like mist on mountains while some bangles are brightly coloured and shining like the shine and glory of a new leaf. Some bangles are beautiful and brightly coloured like that of a bright corn field and are proper to be worn by a bride. There are some bangles which are like the colours of the heart of a bride which is filled both with joy and sorrow. The bride had a feeling of joy at the beginning of her new life and sorrow of leaving her loved ones behind.

There are some bangles which are purple and gold-flecked grey in colour. These bangles are perfect for middle-aged women who have cherished their journey of life by serving their loved ones and feeding their children. These bangles are also for those women who serve their household with pride and worships their husband like gods. The poetess wants to say that the bangle seller has bangles for every stage of a woman’s life.

The poetess represents the stages in the life of a woman with the colours of bangles in this poem. The colour and the design of a woman change according to the changing stages of her life. The bright, rainbow-coloured and shining bangles are for happy daughters and happy wives. Silver and blue bangles are for single women, and purple and gold-flecked grey bangles represent older women who have experienced marriage life and motherhood. Each bangle symbolizes significant stages in an Indian woman’s life.

Ans. I went to see the Baisakhi fair with my family. At the fair, I met my friends and we explored the market set up for the Baisakhi fair. There were a lot of shops full of things like toys, clothes, bangles, sweets and fast food items etc. There was a huge rush in the market.

There were some jugglers too who were showing their tricks. There were stalls for several indoor games too. Children were busy playing games at the fair. We too enjoyed playing games. We also ate sweets and noodles at the fair. I enjoyed my time at the fair.
