“The Friendly Mongoose” is a short story taken from the Panchatantra series. It is a story of a small family having a farmer, his wife, and a small son that lived in a small village. One day farmer brought a baby mongoose home to accompany his son in the future. The baby mongoose also lived with them, to give them company in the future. The baby mongoose grew to its full size in five to six months, but the farmer’s son was still a baby in the cradle.

One day, the farmer’s wife decided to go to the market. She fed the baby and rocked him to sleep. Before leaving for the market she told her husband to keep an eye on the baby because she feared leaving the child alone with the mongoose. The farmer was confident that the mongoose will not harm the child so he left to have a look at his field which was not far away but he met some friends while returning and could not get back on time.

The farmer’s wife returned home after some time She had brought a basket full of groceries. She saw the mongoose sitting outside. She saw its face and paws were covered with blood. She instantly thought that her son had been killed by the mongoose. She hit the mongoose hard with her basket full of groceries on its head. The mongoose died.

She ran inside quickly to look out for her baby and found the baby asleep and a dead black snake in a pool of blood lying near the child’s cradle. She learned the truth the mongoose had saved her son from the snake. She stared at the dead mongoose for a long time and started sobbing and repented a lot. But it was of no use. Her rash and foolish decision were responsible for this. So, we should never take our decisions in hurry.

“द फ्रेंडली मोंगूज” कहानियों की श्रृंखला पंचतंत्र से ली गई एक छोटी कहानी है। यह एक छोटे से गांव में रहने वाले एक छोटे से परिवार की कहानी है जिसमें एक किसान, उसकी पत्नी और एक छोटे बेटे के साथ रहता था। एक दिन किसान भविष्य में अपने बेटे के साथ जाने के लिए एक नेवले के बच्चे को घर ले आया। भविष्य में उनका साथ देने के लिए नेवला का बच्चा भी उनके साथ रहता था। नेवले का बच्चा पांच से छह महीने में अपने पूरे आकार में बढ़ गया, लेकिन किसान का बेटा अभी भी पालने में था।

एक दिन किसान की पत्नी ने बाजार जाने का निश्चय किया। उसने बच्चे को दूध पिलाया और उसे सुला दिया। बाजार जाने से पहले उसने अपने पति से बच्चे पर नजर रखने को कहा क्योंकि उसे नेवले के साथ बच्चे को अकेला छोड़ने का डर था। किसान को विश्वास था कि नेवला बच्चे को नुकसान नहीं पहुँचाएगा इसलिए वह अपने खेत को देखने के लिए चला गया जो बहुत दूर नहीं था लेकिन लौटते समय वह कुछ दोस्तों से मिला और समय पर वापस नहीं आ सका।

किसान की पत्नी कुछ देर बाद घर लौटी वह किराने का सामान से भरी टोकरी लेकर आई थी। उसने देखा कि नेवला बाहर बैठा है और उसका चेहरा और पंजे खून से लथपथ थे। उसने तुरंत सोचा कि उसके बेटे को नेवले ने मार डाला है। उसने नेवले के सिर पर किराने के सामान से भरी टोकरी से जोर से मारा। नेवला मर गया।

वह अपने बच्चे को देखने के लिए तेजी से अंदर भागी और उसने देखा कि बच्चा सो रहा है और खून से लथपथ एक मृत काला सांप बच्चे के पालने के पास पड़ा है। उसे सच पता चला कि नेवले ने उसके बेटे को सांप से बचाया था। वह बहुत देर तक मरे हुई नेवला को देखती रही और रोने लगी और बहुत पछताने लगी। लेकिन इसका कोई फायदा नहीं हुआ। इसके लिए उसका उतावला और मूर्खतापूर्ण निर्णय जिम्मेदार था। इसलिए हमें अपने फैसले कभी भी जल्दबाजी में नहीं लेने चाहिए।

ONCE a farmer and his wife lived in a village with their small son. They loved him very much. “We must have a pet,” the farmer said to his wife one day. “When our son grows up, he will need a companion. This pet will be our son’s companion.” His wife liked the idea. One evening, the farmer brought with him a tiny mongoose. “It’s a baby mongoose,” said his wife, “but will soon be fully grown. He will be a friend to our son.”

Explanation: Once a farmer his wife and their son (child) used to live in a village. They loved their child very much. One day the farmer expressed his wish to his wife to bring a pet to their house. He felt that the pet will be the companion of their son when he grew up. His wife also liked that idea and agreed to bring a pet to their home. The farmer brought a baby mongoose as a pet.

Both the baby and the mongoose grew. In five or six months the mongoose had grown to its full size — a lovely animal with two shining black eyes and a bushy tail. The farmer’s son was still a baby in the cradle, sleeping and crying alternately.

Explanation: One day the farmer’s wife had to go to the market. She fed the baby and swayed him a little from one side to another to make him sleep in his cradle. While she was picking up the basket to leave for the market she said to her husband to take care of the sleeping baby. She further said that she feared leaving her baby alone with the mongoose because it may harm the baby.

“You needn’t be afraid,” said the farmer. “The mongoose is a friendly animal. It’s as sweet as our baby and they are the best of friends, you know.”

Explanation: The farmer told his wife not to be afraid of the mongoose because it was a friendly animal and was as sweet as their child. Also, both of them were best friends.

The wife went away, and the farmer, having nothing to do in the house, decided to go out and take a look at his fields not far away. He ran into some friends on the way back and didn’t return for quite some time.

On seeing her he ran to welcome her, as was customary. The farmer’s wife took one look at the mongoose and screamed. “Blood!” she cried. The face and paws of the mongoose were smeared with blood.

Explanation: The farmer’s wife after finishing her shopping return home with a basket full of groceries. She saw a mongoose waiting outside the home like it was waiting for her. When it saw her it ran towards her as usual. She noticed blood on the face and paws of the mongoose and started shouting and crying. The face and paws of the mongoose were smeared with blood.

“You wicked animal! You have killed my baby,” she screamed hysterically. She was blind with rage and with all her strength brought down the heavy basket full of groceries on the blood-smeared mongoose and ran inside to the child’s cradle.

Explanation: She thought that the mongoose had killed her baby and it was her baby’s blood. She was madly angry at the mongoose and she hit the mongoose with the heavy basket with her full strength and ran inside to see her child.

The baby was fast asleep. But on the floor lay a black snake torn and bleeding. In a flash, she realised what had happened. She ran out looking for the mongoose.

Explanation: After entering the home she found that the baby was in deep sleep in the cradle and a black snake was lying dead on the floor. She at once understood the whole story behind the blood on the paws and face o the mongoose. She ran out to look for the mongoose.

“Oh! You saved my child! You killed the snake! What have I done?” she cried touching the mongoose, who lay dead and still, unaware of her sobbing. The farmer’s wife, who had acted hastily and rashly, stared long at the dead mongoose. Then she heard the baby crying. Wiping her tears, she went in to feed him.

Explanation: The farmer’s wife realized her mistake she started crying after looking at the mongoose. She touched the mongoose who was lying dead. The farmer’s wife acted in haste and killed the mongoose unthoughtfully in a panic. She repented of his action but it was too late.
