Introduction

The poem ‘The Idiot Box’ explains that the TV set is preventing children from developing their minds and hampers their creativity. T.V is termed an idiot box because it is virtually an idiot. The poem throws light on the aspects of how TV influences the mind of a child. The poem is a type of advice to the parents to not expose their children to T.V too much.

He plays with the remote control and watches the spider-man,

He doesn’t know how to play football and shape a snowman.

He made his daddy and mummy buy an LED for him,

He shuts himself in his private room and doesn’t let anyone in.

He hasn’t seen a mountain, a flower garden and a waterfall,

He laughs when he sees an untrue man fly over a hill.

He doesn’t turn the leaves of a picture book or comics,

He changes the channels to suit his shifting moods.

 

He doesn’t relish the food stuffed in his mouth,

He is excited seeing pirates eat fishes and fruits.

He wears thick glasses and contracts his eyes to see

Men, women and children walk in the drawing rooms.

The poem “The Idiot Box” is written about T.V. and its effects on children. It is a type of advice or an eyeopener for the children and parents to prevent the young kids from watching television excessively. The young children like to have remote of T.V in their hands. They love to watch movies like spiderman on television. They hardly enjoyed the outdoor games as they are confined to a room having T.V.

The children these days have not seen mountains, gardens and waterfalls. Instead of enjoying the natural beauty, they laugh at an artificial man flying over the hills. The children nowadays do not like to read comics or books having pictures but they feel more enjoyment in changing the channels of T.V according to their changing moods.

The children are so addicted to television that they do not enjoy the food in their mouths because they are more concentrated on the television screen. They enjoy the pirates eating fish and fruits but do not enjoy what they are eating. The harmful rays of television are effecting the eyesight of children so they have to put on thick glasses and have to contract their eyes to see the people around them.

The children are so much addicted to television that they do not know what is going on around them, they are getting cut off socially. They hardly know what is going on in their society, state or country. They are completely lost in imaginary world of television. The television is turning children into idiots and so it termed as idiot box.

कविता “द इडियट बॉक्स” टी.वी. के बारे में लिखी गई है। यह बच्चों और माता-पिता के लिए एक प्रकार की सलाह या आंखें खोलने वाली है ताकि छोटे बच्चों को जरूरत से ज्यादा टीवी देखने से रोका जा सके। छोटे बच्चों को अपने हाथ में टीवी का रिमोट रखना अच्छा लगता है। वे टेलीविजन पर स्पाइडरमैन जैसी फिल्में देखना पसंद करते हैं। उन्होंने बाहरी खेलों का शायद ही आनंद उठाया क्योंकि वे टीवी वाले कमरे तक ही सीमित हैं।

बच्चों ने इन दिनों पहाड़, बगीचे और झरने नहीं देखे हैं। वे प्राकृतिक सुंदरता का आनंद लेने के बजाय पहाड़ियों पर उड़ रहे एक कृत्रिम व्यक्ति पर हंसते हैं। आजकल के बच्चे कॉमिक्स या तस्वीरों वाली किताबें पढ़ना पसंद नहीं करते हैं लेकिन उन्हें अपने बदलते मिजाज के अनुसार टीवी के चैनल बदलने में ज्यादा मजा आता है।

बच्चे टेलीविजन के इतने आदी हो जाते हैं कि वे मुंह में भोजन का आनंद नहीं लेते क्योंकि वे टेलीविजन स्क्रीन पर अधिक केंद्रित होते हैं। वे समुद्री लुटेरों को मछली और फल खाने का आनंद लेते हैं लेकिन वे जो खा रहे हैं उसका आनंद नहीं लेते हैं। टेलीविजन की हानिकारक किरणें बच्चों की आंखों की रोशनी को प्रभावित कर रही हैं इसलिए उन्हें अपने आसपास के लोगों को देखने के लिए मोटा चश्मा लगाना पड़ता है और अपनी आंखों को सिकोड़ना पड़ता है।

बच्चे टेलीविजन के इतने आदी हो जाते हैं कि उन्हें पता ही नहीं चलता कि उनके आसपास क्या हो रहा है, वे सामाजिक रूप से कटते जा रहे हैं। उन्हें शायद ही पता होता है कि उनके समाज, राज्य या देश में क्या चल रहा है। वे टेलीविजन की काल्पनिक दुनिया में पूरी तरह खो गए हैं। टेलीविजन बच्चों को इडियट्स में बदल रहा है और इसलिए इसे इडियट बॉक्स कहा जाता है।
