The monkey was happy but lonely and wanted a companion to talk to and share the fruits with. But there was no one around, not even another monkey, till one day a crocodile appeared on the riverside.
Explanation: Once a monkey used to live on a tree filled with fruits. He was very happy living on that tree because he had fruits of his choice for eating.
Although the monkey was happy living on the tree still he was lonely because there was no one to talk to or share the fruits from the tree. He had no friends, not even another monkey. Then one day he saw a crocodile on the bank of the river.
“Hello, there,” said the monkey. “Do you live in this river? Would you like to eat some fruit?”
“Good morning,” replied the crocodile politely. “I did come here in search of food for myself and my wife. Nice of you to offer me fruit.”
Explanation: The monkey went near the crocodile and asked him if he lived in that river and also offered him some fruits to eat. The crocodile in response gently wished him good morning. He told the monkey that he came there in search of food for himself and his wife. He also thanked him for the fruits.
The monkey plucked some from the nearest branch and threw them down. The crocodile found them delicious. “Thanks,” he said. “May I have some on my next visit?”
“Certainly, as many as you like and some for your wife too,” said the monkey. “Do come again. I’m rather lonely here.”
Explanation: The monkey plucked and threw some fruit at the crocodile. The crocodile found them very tasty. He thanked the monkey for the fruits and asked if he could have those fruits during his next visit too. The monkey assured him that he could have as much as he wished and he can also take some of them for his wife. He also asked him to visit again because he also used to feel lonely.
The crocodile visited the monkey regularly and ate the fruits which his host threw down. He took some home for his wife. The monkey and the crocodile were now the best of friends. They talked and were never tired of talking. They talked about birds and animals, the villages nearby and the difficulties villagers faced in raising good crops for lack of rain.

- The crocodile couldn’t altogether ignore his wife’s wishes.
One day, the crocodile stayed with the monkey longer than usual. His wife was annoyed waiting and waiting to manage the little crocodiles that had just been hatched. She said, “Who is this friend of yours you are so fond of?”
“Oh, he is a very nice monkey,” he replied. “He lives on a fruit tree. He sends fruits for you every day. You don’t expect me to climb trees, do you?”
“A nice monkey, I’m sure,” replied the wife with obvious sarcasm. “If you ask me, this monkey should be my food. I want to eat his heart so much.”
“What a foolish thing to say!” shouted the crocodile. “I can’t kill a friend, though I won’t mind a monkey occasionally for a change of taste.”
“You bring him here,” ordered the wife. “I want to see him.”
“So you can eat him. Never!” declared her husband.
Explanation: One day the crocodile spent more time than usual with the monkey and got late in returning. His wife was waiting for a home at home and was very angry because she was too irritated by the young crocodiles. When the crocodile returned, she asked him about his friend who was so dear to him.
The crocodile told her that it was a very nice monkey who lived on a fruit tree on the bank of the river. He also told her that it was he who used to send fruits to her every day.
The crocodile’s wife sarcastically replied that it was a nice monkey. She further revealed her wish to eat a monkey as her food and told her husband that she wants to eat the monkey’s heart.
The crocodile shouted in anger over this and told his wife that he can’t kill his friend for her meal though, for a change of taste, he could have a monkey for the meal.
His wife ordered him to bring the monkey to their home because she wanted to see him. The crocodile refused to do so and announced that he will not bring the monkey home.
His wife was furious and she dived in to hide at the bottom of the river leaving the little ones to pester their father.
The crocodile was in a serious dilemma. He loved his wife and was very fond of his friend too. Finally, he decided to be on the side of his wife. “My wife wants you over for a meal, dear friend,” said the crocodile when he visited the monkey next. “You must come home with me today.”
“With pleasure,” said the monkey. “I’m no swimmer, but can ride on your back.” And they set out.
In the middle of the river, where the current was the strongest, the crocodile could no longer hide his intention. “Sorry, my friend,” he said hesitatingly, “but I have to go underwater now. I’ve brought you here to kill you. My wife cannot survive without eating your heart. Goodbye.”
Explanation: The next day when the crocodile met the monkey he told him that his wife has invited him to have a meal at their home. He invited him to accompany him to their home that day.
The monkey accepted his invitation happily but he could not swim and set out for the crocodile’s home riding on his back.
When they reached the middle of the river where the flow of the water was strongest, the crocodile could not hold himself back from telling the truth to the monkey. He told him that he had to go under the water now because he had brought him there to kill him as his wife was unable to survive without eating his heart. After all, what is a monkey’s heart compared with the life of a crocodile’s wife? But how foolish could you be? Why didn’t you tell me before? I’d have brought my heart along.”
Explanation: The monkey was shocked and upset after hearing this but he did not panic. He was very wise and clever and kept his head cool. He gently replied to the crocodile that he can do anything for him and his family because he was his friend. He said that his heart is of no value in front of his friend’s wife’s life. But he said that it was foolish on the part of the crocodile that he did not tell him about the whole matter earlier before they left for the crocodile’s home. He told him that if he had already informed him about the same before he would have brought his heart with him.
“But where is your heart?” asked the crocodile innocently. “I thought you carried it all the time.”
“Of course not. It’s there on the tree. Let’s swim back at once and get it. Your wife must be waiting,” replied the monkey gaining confidence.
“Oh, dear! What a mistake!” hissed the crocodile. They laughed loudly as the crocodile took a full turn to reach the tree.

The crocodile said in a low voice that it was a foolish mistake on his part and they both laughed at the mistake and the crocodile took a full turn to return to the bank.
On the riverbank, the monkey jumped onto the tree and heaved a deep sigh of relief. He plucked a fruit or two from the nearest branch and throwing them down said, “Let your wife have some fruit rather than my heart. Fresh fruits are good for the mind and body. Goodbye, friend, and if you don’t mind, we won’t meet again.” The crocodile, sadder and wiser, shed a few tears which were genuine and turned back to go home. He was in a hurry to tell his wife a thing or two.
