When everybody has short hair,
The rebel lets his hair grow long.
When everybody has long hair,
The rebel cuts his hair short.

When everybody talks during the lesson,
The rebel doesn’t say a word.
When nobody talks during the lesson,
The rebel creates a disturbance.

When everybody wears a uniform,
The rebel dresses in fantastic clothes.
When everybody wears fantastic clothes,
The rebel dresses soberly.

In the company of dog lovers,
The rebel expresses a preference for cats.
In the company of cat lovers,
The rebel puts in a good word for dogs.

When everybody is praising the sun,
The rebel remarks on the need for rain.
When everybody is greeting the rain,
The rebel regrets the absence of the sun.

When everybody goes to the meeting,
The rebel stays at home and reads a book.
When everybody stays at home and reads a book,
The rebel goes to the meeting.

When everybody says, Yes please,
The rebel says, No thank you.

It is very good that we have rebels.

The poem “The Rebel” gives a detailed account of the character of a rebel. A rebel is a person who does everything opposite to what others do in society. There are several instances in the poem which justifies the statement that rebel always does things opposite to others.

If everybody has short hair, he would let his hair grow long. While when others with long hair, the rebel cut his hair short. When everybody talks during the lesson in a class, the rebel will remain silent. When others remain silent, the rebel creates a disturbance in the class.

When everybody wears a uniform in the class, the rebel put on extremely colourful clothes. When others show their liking for dogs while the rebel shows his liking for cats. The rebel talks of the sun while other wishes for rain, when others talk about rain, the rebel wishes for sunshine.

When others go to attend the meeting, the rebel would like to stay at home and read the book. While the others stay at home and read the book, the rebel goes to attend the meeting. When others say yes please, the rebel says no thank you.

It is good to have rebels but the poet feels that it is not good to be a rebel.

जब अन्य लोग सभा में भाग लेने जाते हैं, तो विद्रोही घर पर रहकर पुस्तक पढ़ना चाहता है। जबकि अन्य लोग घर पर रहकर किताब पढ़ते हैं, विद्रोही सभा में भाग लेने जाता है। जब अन्य लोग हाँ कहते हैं, तो विद्रोही नहीं कहता है।

Theme of the Poem The Rebel

The poem describes the nature of a rebel in detail.  A rebel always does just the opposite of what others do around him. The rebel always behaves differently from others. The poet tells that it is not good to be a rebel because rebel cause problems for others and is left alone but at the same time it is good because it is the rebel who comes with the new ideas and has the guts to stand against the evils of society.
