Weather Climate and Adaptations of Animals to Climate is Chapter 7 taken from JKBOSE and NCERT textbook of Science for students of Class 7th. In the previous post, I provided you with Questions and Answers for Chapter 6 Physical and Chemical Changes. This post is about Weather Climate and Adaptations of Animals to Climate Question Answers. Before we proceed to our Question Answers section of the chapter, you need to have basic information about the chapter you have studied in your classroom reading. So here is a brief overview of the chapter:
Weather Climate and Adaptations of Animals to Climate Question Answers
Overview of Chapter
- WEATHER.
- CLIMATE.
- CLIMATE AND ADAPTATION.
WEATHER: The day-to-day condition of the atmosphere at a place with respect to the temperature, humidity, rainfall, wind speed, etc., is called the weather at that place. The weather of a place changes day after day and week after week. The factors which decide the weather of a place are called elements of weather.
CLIMATE: The average weather pattern taken over a long time, say 25 years, is called the climate of the place. Different places in the world have different types of climates. There are four major types of climate in the world.
(1) Polar Climate
(2) Temperate Climate
(3) Tropical Climate
(4) Desert Climate.
CLIMATE AND ADAPTATION: Animals or plants living in any kind of environment have certain features or abilities which enable them to survive in that environment. It is called adaptation. In this chapter, you have studied the adaptations of animals living in polar regions and tropical rainforests.
EXERCISES
- Name the elements that determine the weather of a place.
Ans. The elements which determine the weather of a place are temperature, rainfall, humidity, wind speed, wind direction and pressure etc.
- When are the maximum and minimum temperatures likely to occur during the day?
Ans. The maximum temperature is likely to occur in the afternoon whereas the minimum temperature is likely to occur in the early morning.
- Fill in the blanks:
(i) The average weather taken over a long time is called climate.
(ii) A place receives very little rainfall and the temperature is high throughout the year, the climate of that place will be hot and dry.
(iii) The two regions of the earth with extreme climatic conditions are the polar and tropical regions.
- Indicate the type of climate of the following areas:
(a) Jammu and Kashmir: Moderately hot and Cold climate.
(b) Kerala: Very hot and wet climate.
(c) Rajasthan: Hot and dry climate.
(d) North-east India: Wet climate.
- Which of the two changes frequently, weather or climate?
Ans. The weather of a place changes frequently in a short period of time.
- Following are some of the characteristics of animals:
(i) Diets heavy on fruits (ii) White fur (iii) Need to migrate (iv) Loud voice (v) Sticky pads on feet (vi) Layer of fat under the skin (vii) Wide and large paws (viii) Bright colours (ix) Strong tails (x) Long and large beak
For each characteristic indicate whether it is an adaptation for tropical rainforests or polar regions. Do you think that some of these characteristics can be adapted for both regions?
Ans.
Characteristic of Animal | Adaptation for the region |
---|---|
(i) Diets heavy on fruits | Tropical rain forest |
(ii) White fur | Polar region |
(iii) Need to migrate | Polar region |
(iv) Loud voice | Tropical rain forest |
(v) Sticky pads on feet | Tropical rain forest |
(vi) Layer of fat under the skin | Polar region |
(vii) Wide and large paws | Polar region |
(viii) Bright colours | Tropical rain forest |
(ix) Strong tails | Tropical rain forest |
(x) Long and large beak | Tropical rain forest |
7. The tropical rainforest has a large population of animals. Explain why it is so.
Ans. The tropical rainforest has a large population of animals because of favourable climatic conditions for the survival of a variety of animals. The climate in tropical regions is hot and humid. The tropical regions receive abundant rainfall which favours the growth of dense forest cover in this region which is used as shelter and food by animals.
8. Explain, with examples, why we find animals of certain kinds living in particular climatic conditions.
Ans. Climate has a great effect on all living organisms. The animal can survive in any particular habitat or environment only if its body is adapted to the climate of that habitat. The animals living in extremely cold or hot climates must have special features in their body to protect themselves from extreme cold or heat of the climate. For example, the animals living in the polar regions have adaptations like white fur, thick skin, a strong sense of smell, a lot of fat and wide and large paws etc.
9. How did an elephant living in the tropical rainforest adapt itself?
Ans. The elephant living in the tropical rainforest adapts itself to the climate of tropical rainforests in the following ways:
(a) The elephant uses its trunk as its nose because of it, an elephant has a strong sense of smell. A trunk is also used to pick up the food and put it into the mouth.
(b) The tusks of elephant acts as teeth which are used to tear the bark of trees.
(c) Large ears of elephants help them to hear even very soft sounds. Elephants also use their large ears as a fan to cool themselves when the temperature rises.
10. A carnivore with stripes on its body moves very fast while catching its prey. It is likely to be found in
(i) polar regions
(ii) deserts
(iii) oceans
(iv) tropical rainforests
Ans. It is found in tropical rainforests.
11. Which features adapt polar bears to live in an extremely cold climate?
(i) A white fur, fat below the skin, keen sense of smell.
(ii) Thin skin, large eyes, a white fur.
(iii) A long tail, strong claws, and white large paws.
(iv) White body, paws for swimming, gills for respiration.
Ans. (i) A white fur, fat below the skin, keen sense of smell adapts polar bears to live in an extremely cold climate.
12. Which option best describes a tropical region?
(i) hot and humid
(ii) moderate temperature, heavy rainfall
(iii) cold and humid
(iv) hot and dry
Ans. (i) hot and humid best describes a tropical region.
