Weather Climate and Adaptations of Animals to Climate is Chapter 7 taken from JKBOSE and NCERT textbook of Science for students of Class 7th. In the previous post, I provided you with Questions and Answers for Chapter 6 Physical and Chemical Changes. This post is about Weather Climate and Adaptations of Animals to Climate Class 7th Question Answers. Before we proceed to our Question Answers section of the chapter, you need to have basic information about the chapter you have studied in your classroom reading. So here is a brief overview of the chapter:
Winds Storms and Cyclones Class 7 Question Answer
Overview of Chapter
The earth on which we live is surrounded by a lot of air. The layer or blanket of air surrounding the earth is called the atmosphere. The moving air is called wind. You have studied about following topics in detail in this chapter:
- AIR EXERTS PRESSURE.
- HIGH-SPEED WINDS ARE ACCOMPANIED BY REDUCED AIR PRESSURE.
- AIR EXPANDS ON HEATING.
- WIND CURRENTS ARE GENERATED DUE TO UNEVEN HEATING ON THE EARTH.
- Uneven heating between the equator and the poles.
- Uneven heating of land and water.
- THUNDERSTORMS AND CYCLONES.
- How a thunderstorm becomes a cyclone?
- DESTRUCTION CAUSED BY CYCLONES.
- EFFECTIVE SAFETY MEASURES.
- ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY HAS HELPED.
AIR EXERTS PRESSURE: The continuous physical force exerted on an object or against an object when something comes in contact with it, is called pressure. Air exerts pressure in different ways under different situations and on all objects and in all directions.
HIGH-SPEED WINDS ARE ACCOMPANIED BY REDUCED AIR PRESSURE: Air moves from the region of higher pressure to the region of lower pressure. The greater the difference in pressure, the faster the air moves.
AIR EXPANDS ON HEATING: Air is a mixture of gases. The molecules of air gain kinetic energy on heating and move away from each other occupying more space. The volume of air increases on heating.
WIND CURRENTS ARE GENERATED DUE TO UNEVEN HEATING ON THE EARTH: Wind is a movement of air which depends on the difference in air pressure in two regions. Air moves from a region of high pressure to a region of low pressure in the atmosphere. The uneven heating on earth takes place under two situations:
- Uneven heating between the equator and the poles: It is because the equatorial region receives maximum sunlight while the region near the poles receives minimum sunlight. This uneven heating of air makes the wind blow from the poles to the warmer regions.
- Uneven heating of land and water: In summer, near the equator, the land warms up faster and most of the time the temperature of the land is higher than that of water in the oceans. In winter, the direction of the wind flow gets reversed; it flows from the land to the ocean.
THUNDERSTORMS AND CYCLONES: The swift movement of the falling water droplets along with the rising air create lightning and sound. It is this event that we call a thunderstorm. A cyclone is a weather condition consisting of a system of high-speed winds revolving around a central area of very low pressure. It is accompanied by strong winds and heavy rains.
DESTRUCTION CAUSED BY CYCLONES: Cyclones are very destructive. They cause widespread destruction and loss of life in coastal areas. It causes the toppling of trees, electrical poles, telephone poles and vehicles, damaging houses and thus causing a great loss of life and property.
EFFECTIVE SAFETY MEASURES: To stay from cyclones we must follow the below-mentioned safety measures.
- On the part of the government: Cyclone forecast warning systems, cyclone shelters, the transmission of cyclone warnings to the general public, and administrative arrangements to deal with this emergency.
- On the part of People: Do not ignore warnings, make arrangements to shift household materials and animals to safer places, avoid driving on roads underwater, and phone numbers of emergency services must be kept ready.
ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY HAS HELPED: Due to satellites and radars, a cyclone alert or cyclone watch is issued 48 hours in advance of any storm and a cyclone warning is issued 24 hrs in advance.
EXERCISES
- Fill in the missing word in the blank spaces in the following statements:
(a) Wind is moving air.
(b) Winds are generated due to uneven heating on the earth.
(c) Near the earth’s surface warm air rises up whereas cool air comes down.
(d) Air moves from a region of high pressure to a region of low pressure.
2. Suggest two methods to find out wind direction at a given place.
Ans. The two ways to find out the direction of the wind at a given place are:
(a) By watching the direction of paper blowing in the air.
(b) By using an instrument called an anemometer, which can find the direction and speed of the wind.
(c) By flying a kite.
3. State two experiences that made you think that air exerts pressure. (other than those given in the text).
Ans. Following are the two experiences that made us think that air exerts pressure:
(a) When we fill the air in a balloon, it inflates due to pressure exerted by air.
(b) Cycling against the direction of the wind is difficult, it shows air exerts pressure.
(c) Rowing a boat against the direction of the wind is difficult compared to rowing it in the direction of the wind. It is due to pressure exerted by wind.
4. You want to buy a house. Would you like to buy a house having windows but no ventilators? Explain your answer.
Ans. No, I would not like to buy a house having windows but no ventilators because a good house has both windows and ventilators. Windows are meant for the flow of fresh air into the house while ventilators remove the warm air from the house. So, to make a continuous flow of cool and fresh air to the house through windows, there must be ventilators in the upper part of the wall of the house.
5. Explain why holes are made in hanging banners and hoardings.
Ans. Holes are made in hanging banners and hoardings to let the high-speed winds pass through them. As a result, there is less air pressure on these banners and hoardings. If these holes are not made, high-speed winds will either carry these banners and hoardings along with them to far-off places or tear them apart.
6. How will you help your neighbours in case a cyclone approaches your village/town?
Ans. I will help my neighbours in case a cyclone approaches our village in the following ways:
(a) I will help in shifting their household articles and domestic animals to safer places.
(b) I will warn everyone about the coming danger.
(c) Managing the first aid facility.
(d) Moving people to cyclone shelters.
7. What planning is required in advance to deal with the situation created by a cyclone?
Ans. Good planning can minimise the damage caused by cyclones. The following planning is required in advance to deal with the situation created by a cyclone.
(1) Keep listening carefully to the warnings issued by the meteorological department through TV, radio and newspaper.
(2) Shifting household articles and domestic animals to safer places.
(3) Keeping the emergency kit ready.
(4) The handy phone of essential services like police, fire brigade, and medical centres should be kept ready.
(5) Avoid driving on roads through standing water.
Which one of the following places is unlikely to be affected by a cyclone?
(i) Chennai
(ii) Mangaluru (Mangalore)
(iii) Amritsar
(iv) Puri
Ans. Amritsar.
9. Which of the statements given below is correct?
(i) In winter the winds flow from the land to the ocean.
(ii) In summer the winds flow from the land towards the ocean.
(iii) A cyclone is formed by a very high-pressure system with very high-speed winds revolving around it.
(iv) The coastline of India is not vulnerable to cyclones.
Ans. In winter the winds flow from the land to the ocean.
