With a Little Bit of Luck Summary in English
Joe was a poor man searching for a job. One evening when he was returning home, he said to himself that he needed a bit of luck to get a job.
He thought of his wife, who was not well and needed a holiday, his son John needed a new pair of boots and his daughter Ellie was asking for a new frock. Joe was feeling helpless because he was not able to fulfil the needs of his family. He said to himself that he just needed a full-time job and a new suit but feels that he was the unluckiest person in the world.
He was walking along the roadside and saw a necklace lying on the grass. He was overjoyed when it saw it and thought it must be of about a hundred pounds. He thought of selling it and fulfilling the needs of the family.
He was very happy but suddenly he stopped and thought that he can’t sell the necklace because he was neither the owner of the necklace nor a thief. He took the necklace home and asked his son to take the necklace to the police station hand it over to the officer and tell them that he has found it along the roadside.
John went to the police station. He knew the police inspector, Mr. Peter. He asked him if there was any reward for the finder of the necklace. The police inspector laughed and said that necklace was not so costly and there may be no reward for it. He said that necklace belongs to Martha. The police inspector handed over the necklace to the owner.
The next morning Martha’s father Mr. Jones came to visit Joe’s home. He said that he came to thank her husband for returning the necklace and he wanted Joe to work for him as a gardener because he is an honest fellow.
The next day Joe visited Mr. Jones residence. Mr. Jones liked him and gave him the job. Both Mr. and Mrs. Jones were kind and friendly to him. Joe was very happy when he returned home. He told his family that he had found an excellent job and had also received the wages for the first week in advance. He now feels that he was the luckiest man in the world.
His wife said that it wasn’t the necklace that did it but it was Joe’s honesty to return the necklace that has changed his luck. She was right and their luck turned from that day.
