Golu Grows a Nose Chapter 5 Summary in English
Many years ago, elephants didn’t have trunks. Golu, a curious baby elephant with only a bulgy nose, asked his family members many questions, but they found his inquiries too difficult to answer. He asked the ostrich, “Why don’t you ever fly like other birds ?” He asked his very big uncle the hippopotamus, “Why are your eyes always so red?” Golu’s uncles did not answer his questions.
One day Golu met a mynah. He asked it, “What does a crocodile have for dinner?” The mynah advised Golu to go to the Limpopo River. Golu went home. After the meals, Golu said to his family, “Goodbye. I am going to the great grassy Limpopo River. Determined to find out what crocodiles had for dinner, Golu set off to the Limpopo River.
On his journey, he encountered a python. He asked him also the same question. The python also did not give any reply but quietly followed him. When they reached the river, Golu mistook a large log for a crocodile. To his surprise, the log winked and revealed itself as the crocodile. Golu, still curious, asked the crocodile about its dinner. The crocodile, scheming to eat Golu, asked him to come closer to whisper the answer. Instead, the crocodile caught Golu by the nose, declaring him the day’s dinner.
A timely intervention came from the python, advising Golu to pull hard. A struggle ensued, during which Golu’s nose stretched, and the python coiled around his stomach. Ultimately, Golu freed himself, but his nose had grown to five feet. Waiting for it to cool and shrink, Golu realized it didn’t revert to its original size.
The python explained that the long nose, now a trunk, had its benefits. It helped elephants keep flies away, eat large quantities of food, and throw mud or water on themselves when hot. Grateful for the python’s help, Golu returned home with his newfound trunk.
