The Wrath of Heaven Chapter Summary in English
Once upon a time, there was a really hot day in the desert. A group of forty Christian missionaries was travelling to Morocco for a yearly meeting. They had an old woman with them who had been a sinner throughout her life. Now, she wanted to do penance by helping these holy men on their journey.
As they walked, the sun became scorching hot. Even though the weather was unbearable, they couldn’t stop for a break. They had to reach the city before sunset. The old woman, however, found it hard to keep up with the others. Whenever they had to pause and wait for her, the rest of the group insulted her. But the old woman didn’t let those insults bother her. Instead, she wished them well.
In the afternoon, the sky suddenly turned dark. The air cooled down, and mist covered the sky. They couldn’t figure out the way forward. The bishop decided they should take refuge in an old and deserted church. Soon, thick, dark clouds covered the entire sky, and heavy rain began to pour. It felt like the whole world was shaking. Everyone sat in different corners of the church, and the bishop started chanting hymns. It was so dark that they couldn’t even see each other. The bishop lit a lantern and told his companions that this storm was not ordinary. According to him, the storm had hit them because there was a sinner among them. To save themselves, the sinner needed to confess. All the holy men and the old woman started crying upon hearing this. The bishop suggested a solution – they should each go around the church one by one and touch the well in the compound after completing the round. According to the bishop, the sinner would be swallowed up by the well, and the rest would be saved.
The first one to go was the bishop himself. Before starting, he declared that his belongings should be given to his heirs without being opened if he didn’t return. There was a huge cloudburst as he approached the well after completing the round around the church, but he came back unharmed. The next person was the bishop’s deputy, who also asked for his belongings to be given to his ex-wife. Again, there was a massive cloudburst, but he, too, returned safely. This process repeated for all the holy men, each announcing their will before taking the round. Each time there was a cloudburst, but everyone returned safely. Suddenly, lightning flashed in the sky, and the bishop saw the old woman sitting among the luggage. All the holy men concluded that it was her presence that had caused the terrible storm. The bishop told her to go out and take a round around the church.
The old woman got up and confessed all her past sins, crying as she spoke. She told the bishop that she wanted to do penance by staying with these holy men. However, the bishop got angry and asked her to leave. Like the other holy men, the old woman announced her will and gave all her savings to the congress of the missionaries. After handing over the money to the bishop, she started her round. The atmosphere became darker, and the thundering became louder. When she reached the well, a terrible cloudburst occurred, and lightning flashed past the well and the church. Suddenly, all the thundering and lightning stopped, and calmness prevailed. When the old woman opened her eyes, the sky was clear, and the evening sun was shining brightly. To her surprise, though, there was a deep and large cave in place of the church.
