Mystery of the Talking Fan Poem Summary
The poem starts with the poet telling us about a talking fan, which used to give an electrical chatter. The chatter was the noise made by the motor of the fan due to an electric fault. The poet is unable to understand what exactly it means, and she wrote that she hoped that the electrical chatter was meaningless in context. This is because one day someone came and oiled the fan so that it couldn’t make its chatter-like noise, and since then there had been no mysterious noises from it, no mystery behind its chatter as it worked as noiseless or as still as stagnant water.

1. Fans don’t talk, but it is possible to imagine that they do. What is it, then, that sounds like the fan’s chatter?
Ans. When the motor of the fan is not oiled, it makes noise during the rotation of the blades. The poet calls it the chatter of the fan. We too can imagine the sound created by a fan as they “talking” to us. It all depends on the working of our minds at that time.
2. Complete the following sentences:
(i) The chatter is electrical because
Ans. The chatter is electrical because the fan is electrically operated or works with the passage of electricity.
(ii) It is mysterious because
Ans. It is mysterious because the poet cannot understand what the sound means.
3. What do you think the talking fan was demanding?
Ans. I think the talking fan was demanding to oil. I think so because the poor fan must have been fed up with chattering continuously.
4. How does an electric fan manage to throw so much air when it is switched on?
Ans. When the electric fan is switched on, it throws so much air. It is because the blades rotate very fast and strike against the passing air.
5. Is there a “talking fan’ in your house? Create a dialogue between the fan and the mechanic.
Ans. Fan: Finally, you have come!
Mechanic: I came when I was called.
Fan: I think you were called late. I am fed up with producing meaningless noises. My prestige has also been lowered because of my old-age ailments.
Mechanic: Don’t worry, I shall set you perfectly alright. You will feel young again.
Fan: Thanks a lot!
