Welcome to a new blog post in Class 7th English. The poem “The Shed” is Poem 3 taken from newly introduced Melody English for students of Class 7th of JKBOSE. The poem is written by Frank Flynn. There’s a shed at the bottom of our garden
With a spider’s web hanging across the door,
The hinges are rusty and creak in the wind.
When I’m in bed I lie and I listen,
I’ll open that door one day.
There’s a dusty old window around the side
With three cracked panes of glass,
I often think there’s someone staring at me
Each time that I pass,
I’ll peep through that window one day.
My brother says there’s a ghost in the shed
Who hides under the rotten floorboards,
And if I ever dare to set foot inside
He’ll jump out and chop off my head,
But I’ll take a peek one day.
I know that there isn’t really a ghost,
My brother tells lies to keep the shed for his den;
There isn’t anyone staring or making strange noises
And the spider has been gone from his web
since I don’t know when,
I’ll go into that shed one day soon,
But not just yet.

The Shed Melody English Class 7 Summary in English
In this poem poet talks about a small room called a shed, away from the main house and situated at the bottom of the poet’s garden. The shed is in really bad shape, and whenever the poet goes through it, he feels like someone is watching him. The poet’s brother further increases his fear by making up a story that a ghost lives in the shed.
According to his brother, the ghost hides beneath the rotten floorboards and might jump out to attack the poet someday. However, the truth is that there is no ghost in the shed. The brother makes up this tale to scare the poet away so that he can keep the shed for himself.
Despite the frightening story, the poet eventually decides to face his fear of ghosts. He declares that one day he will enter the shed, indicating his determination to overcome his fear and explore the mysterious room for himself.

His brother had been telling him lies because he wanted to retain the shed for himself. There is actually nobody inside the shed, who stares at him or makes those strange noises. Also, the spider, too, is no longer there. Therefore, very soon the poet could set foot inside the shed. However, he says that this can’t happen immediately.

- Answer the following questions:
(i) Who is the speaker in the poem?
Ans. The poet is the speaker.
(ii) Is she/he afraid or curious, or both?
Ans. He is both afraid and curious as he wants to step into the shed. He is curious to enter the shed, and at the same time, he feels that someone is staring at him.
(iii) What is she/he planning to do soon?
Ans. The poet is planning to take a peek inside the shed, open the door and enter the shed someday soon.
(iv) “But not just yet…..” suggests doubt, fear, hesitation, laziness or something else. Choose the word which seems right to you. Tell others why you chose it.
Ans. This shows that the poet has fear in his mind and is hesitant to go in. His brother has made him doubtful that there is a ghost in the shed. He currently fears that someone is staring at him and, at the same time, also thinks that his brother’s claim that there’s a ‘ghost’ is just a lie. So, he hesitates to go inside the shed for now.
2. Is there a room in your house or a house in your neighbourhood/locality where you would rather not go alone, and never at night? If there is such a place and a story to go with it, let others hear all about it.
Ans. There is an abandoned panchayat house in our village. This place has been deserted for years and nobody is allowed to enter the place as it is supposed to be haunted by ghosts. Getting to such a place is an adventure. I’ll go there one day but not today.
