Introduction
The Chapter “Three Questions” is about a king who wanted to know the answers to three questions. He thought he would never fail and would be a great ruler if he knew the answers to these three questions. How he got the answers to his questions is the main theme of the story.
Summary of Story Three Questions in English
The story revolves around a king who wants to know the answer of the three questions to become a successful and great ruler. The questions asked by the king were symbolic and everyone in his/her life can relate to these.
The three questions were:
- What was the right time for every action?
- Who were the right people to be with?
- What was the most important thing to do?
He announced a great reward to the person who could answer these questions.
A lot of learned men came up with their answers but the king was not satisfied with their answers so the king decided to consult a wise hermit who was widely known for his wisdom. The king visited the hermit’s hut like a common man, he saw the hermit digging the ground in front of his hut. He welcomed the king and continued his work.
The king asked his three questions to the hermit but he didn’t answer and kept digging into the ground. The king took the spade from the hermit and did digging work for him and in between kept asking his questions but the hermit didn’t reply to his questions. It was evening now and the king said to the hermit that he had come to him to seek answers to his questions and if couldn’t answer his questions reply to him no and he would return home.
Just then a bearded man with his hands on his stomach came running towards them. He was wounded and blood was oozing out of his wound. The hermit and the king helped the bearded man and dressed his wound until the bleeding stopped. They carried the wounded man into the hermit’s hut and laid him in the bed. The king was also tired of his work and work he had done in the day so he lay down on the floor and fell asleep.
The next day, the king woke up and the bearded man saw him and apologized to him. He admitted that he was an enemy of the king. The bearded man said that he heard about the king going to the hermit so he tried to kill him when he was on his way back home but he failed and was wounded by the king’s bodyguards.
The king asked the hermit once again for his answers to which the hermit said that the most important time is our present because it is the only moment when we have the power to act. The most important person at the moment is ourselves because the future is unpredictable and the most important business is to be kind and good to others because we have been sent in this world to serve this noble cause.
So in this way, the hermit told the king that all the answers were within himself. By helping the wounded man and by spending time with the hermit he got to know the answer to his questions which he got through self-realization. He learned to do good to others without thinking about himself.

1. Why was the King advised to go to magicians?
Ans. The king was advised to go to a magician to decide the right time to do something because to know the right time one needs to know the future and that could be done by magicians only.
2. In answer to the second question, whose advice did the people say would be important to the King?
Ans. In the answer to the second question, people said that the advice of councillors, or doctors and priests, would be important.
3. What suggestions were made in answer to the third question?
Ans. In answer to the third question, few suggested science, and fighting and some suggested religious worship to be the most important thing.
4. Did the wise men win the reward? If not, why not?
Ans. The wise men did not win the reward as they gave different answers to his questions and the king was not satisfied with their answers.
5. How did the king and the hermit help the wounded man?
Ans. The king with the help of hermit helped the wounded man by removing his clothes, washing his wound and covering it with his handkerchief. He redressed it till the bleeding stopped.
6. (i) Who was the bearded man?
The bearded man was the enemy of the king because he had sentenced the bearded man’s brother to death and taken away all his property, too.
(ii) Why did he ask for the King’s forgiveness?
(ii) He had sworn revenge on the king. But the king had saved his life by dressing his wound. The bearded man felt grateful and asked for forgiveness.
7. The king forgave the bearded man. What did he do to show his forgiveness?
Ans. The king promised to send his servants and doctor to look after him and also promised to return his property to show his forgiveness. He was happy to make peace with his enemy.
8. What were the hermit’s answers to the three questions? Write each answer separately. Which answer do you like most, and why?
Ans. To the king’s first question, the hermit said that the most important time is ‘Now’ i.e. present. It is the only time when you have the power to act.
To the king’s second question, the hermit answered that the most important person is the one with whom we are at the present.
To the king’s third question, the hermit answered that the most important thing to do is to do that person good we are at that moment. I like the answer to the first question the most because time has supreme power. It can take you to a height if you do something good and can also make you fall on the ground if you don’t act in present.
