What If Class 6 Poem Text (By Shel Silverstein)
Last night, while I lay thinking here,
Some Whatifs crawled inside my ear
And pranced and partied all night long
And sang their same old Whatif song:
Whatif I’m dumb in school?
Whatif they’ve closed the swimming pool?
Whatif I get beat up?
Whatif there’s poison in my cup?
Whatif I start to cry?
Whatif I get sick and die?
Whatif I flunk that test?
Whatif green hair grows on my chest?
Whatif nobody likes me?
Whatif a bolt of lightning strikes me?
Whatif I don’t grow taller?
Whatif my head starts getting smaller?
Whatif the fish won’t bite?
Whatif the wind tears up my kite?
Whatif they start a war?
Whatif my parents get divorced?
Whatif the bus is late?
Whatif my teeth don’t grow in straight?
Whatif I tear my pants?
Whatif I never learn to dance?
Everything seems swell, and then
The night-time Whatif strikes again!

The poem “What If” is written by Shel Silverstein. There are several instances in life when fear and doubts fill our minds and we start thinking what if something unwanted happens. In this poem, the poet asks himself several what-if questions about several difficult situations.
The poet said that last night when he was lying in the bed thinking, he throughout the night thought of several what-if questions about several unpleasant situations that may not even take place
The poet wondered what would happen if he became dumb in the school, or if they don’t let him enter the swimming pool and beat him. He also wondered about the situation if someone put poison in his cup or if he started crying or maybe, he gets sick and dies.
He also imagined the situation of what would happen if failed the test or green hair grows on his chest or he was disliked by everyone. He thought of situations as he got struck by lightning, or he does not grow taller, his head starting to decrease in size.
He further thought of situations like kite tearing his kite, starting of war, his parents getting divorced, his bus coming late, his teeth not growing straight, and he tearing his pants.
At last, he thought of the situation what would happen if he never learns to dance, or if everything around him looks swollen and the next night same what-if questions keep him restless.
