Living and Non-Living Things Class 4 EVS Notes
Introduction
The chapter “Living and Non-Living Organisms is included in the textbook of Class 4th EVS to incite the basic idea of living and non-living things in the children. The chapter describes the basic characteristics of living things and non-living things. It would help young kids to identify the living and non-living things and differentiate between them.
Characteristics of Living Things
The salient features that differentiate living things from non-living things are termed as characteristics of living things. The main characteristics of living things are:
- They show movement.
- They need food, air and water.
- They grow.
- They reproduce to produce new young ones.
Movement in Living Things
These two pictures above have different descriptions.
In Picture 1, a boy is standing near the table and pot with a plant in it.
In Picture 2, we see the boy is walking away from the table when asked to do so by the teacher. If the same thing is asked from the table or pot. They cannot do it because they can’t move on their own.
What we have learnt
- Things like human beings, animals, birds, fish, insects etc. can move from one place to another by themselves.
- The things like a rope, a car, a stone, a pencil, a shoe, etc. cannot move on their own from one place to another.
Movement in Plants
- Plants cannot move from one place to another on their own but show some typical movements.
- Some flowers open in the sunlight and close at the sunset e.g. Sunflower, Tulip, etc.
- Sunflower turns its direction with the direction of the Sun.
- The blooming of buds into flowers is also a type of movement shown by plants.
- The plants like Touch-me-not shrink their leaves when we try to touch them.
Living Things Need Air, Water and Food
All living things whether plants or animals need air, water and food to stay alive or survive. We human beings or other animals get their food from plants or other animals.
Like us plans also need air, water and food to remain alive. How do plants get their food?
- Plants make their own food, unlike animals which depend on plants.
- Plants need carbon dioxide, water and mineral salts to prepare their food.
- They get carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
- Water and mineral salts are taken from the soil through the roots.
- Plants prepare food in their green leaves.
What we have learnt
- Human beings, animals, birds, insects, fish and plants need air, water and food to live.
- A table, a pencil, a stone, a shirt, etc. do not need food, water and air because they are non-living things.
The picture above shows the stages of growth of a plant, a girl and a cow. It means that with the passage of time
- Plants grow.
- Animals grow.
- Human beings grow.
What we have learnt
- Human beings, plants and animals grow with the passage of time.
- A table, a rope, a shirt does not grow with the passage of time.
Reproduction
In the picture above we see a man and a woman, a fish, a cow and a hen with their young ones. There is also a plant and its sapling.
All these things give birth to their young ones like themselves. The non-living things cannot give birth to their young ones.
What we have learnt
- Human beings, plants and animals give birth to young ones like themselves.
- A table, a rope, a pencil, a shirt, etc. cannot give birth to young ones like themselves.
Conclusion
All things which breathe, need food and water, move from one place to another on their own and give birth to young ones, are called Living Things.
Things that do not breathe, do not need food, and water, do not move from one place to another on their own and do not give birth to young ones, are called Non-Living Things.
