The Little Girl Summary in English
“The Little Girl” is a story about a little girl who was very afraid of his father. She used to avoid him. Before leaving for the day’s work, he’d kiss her. When the noise of the carriage gets fainter, she would feel relaxed. When he returns home in the evening, her mother would ask her to take off his boots. He would then sit to relax and the little girl was terrified when she looked at him. He would ask her to pull off the boots to take them outside. She would stutter while talking to her father. He looked at him as a giant, especially his mouth when he yawned.
One day grandmother suggested Kezia prepare a pincushion for her father as a birthday gift. She stitched the three sides of the pincushion and now she wanted to stuff it. She searched for something to stuff it and found many sheets of paper on the bedtable in her mother’s room. She tore them up into pieces and stuffed the pincushion with them. Unfortunately, these were important papers on which the speech of her father was written.
That night Kezia’s father had to deliver a speech for the Port Authority. But the papers on which it was written went missing. A thorough search was made in the home but they could not find the papers. The mother came to Kezia’s room and inquired about the papers. She accepted her mistake and told her mother that she had unknowingly torn these papers to stuff the pincushion.
The father came into her room. He had a ruler in his hand. Kezia screamed and hid under bed covers. She said that she had used the papers to stuff a pin cushion for his birthday gift but his father was very angry. He did not listen to her and beat her up with a ruler on her pink palms. A few hours later her grandfather wrapped her up in a sheet She rocked her in a rocking chair. The little girl clung to her soft body and said, “What did God make father’s for?”
One day her mother fell ill and was taken to hospital by her grandmother. The little girl was alone with Alice at home. She feared a nightmare to come to her in her sleep. She had the same frightening nightmare. She woke up in the middle of the night screaming and found her father beside her bed.
He asked her why she was upset. He blew out the candle and carried her in his arms to the big bedroom. The father asked her to rub her feet against his legs to get warm. She felt very safe and comfortable with him.
He was very tired and slept before the little girl. She felt that her father was softer than the grandmother – but it was nice. It was now she realized that her father was not all that of a giant. She sighed. The father asked if the dream had come again. The girl said that her head was on his heart. “What a big heart you have got, father dear?” she said. Now, she realized that her father is not bad but he loves her in his own way.
