(A) Answer these questions:
1. Who was Surya Singh? Who did he meet on his way?
Ans. Surya Singh was the Prince of Manipur. On his way to Delhi, he met a weak and tired looking traveller sitting on the roadside.
2. How did Surya Singh help the traveller?
Ans. Surya Singh helped the traveller by offering him to ride the horse and show him the way to Delhi because he was also going to Delhi and does not know the path.
3. Where did the two men go to settle the dispute?
Ans. The two men went to the judge (Birbal) to settle their dispute. Birbal heard their case and settled their dispute.
4. How did Birbal settle the dispute?
Ans. Birbal told both the men to leave the horse and come back the next day for the judgment. When both of them, Birbal asked one of the servants to take the horse and follow them at a distance and set it free to see whom it followed and bring it back. The next day Birbal asked both of them to recognize the horse. The traveller was unable to identify the horse while Prince recognized his horse immediately. In this way, Birbal settled the dispute.

A) Past Simple Tense
Look at the following sentence:
- I met him yesterday.
The above sentence expresses some action which happened at some time in the past.
Thus, Past Simple Tense is used to show an action that happened or took place at some-time in the past and the Second Form of the Verb is used with all Subjects.
But in Negative and Interrogative Sentences of Past Simple, ‘did’ is used to form the sentences.
Thus, the Negative sentence of the above will be:
(a) I did not (didn’t) meet him yesterday.
Similarly, the Interrogative sentence of the above will be:
(b) Did I meet him yesterday?
NOTE: The Second Form of the Verb (met) is changed to the First Form of the Verb (meet) in both the Negative and Interrogative sentences.
This tense is also used to express some past habit, e.g.:
- She never came here in the daytime.
- She studied for many hours every day.

B) Look at the following sentence used in the text:

This sentence is in direct speech or direct narration. The same sentence can be turned into indirect speech in the following way:
He stopped the horse and asked him which way he was going.
While turning a Wh-question into indirect narration we use the subject before the verb.
Note: Wh-question is a question that starts with a Wh-word e.g. What, Which,Why, Where, When, Who, etc.
Now turn the following sentences into indirect narration:
- He said to him, “How old are you?”

- He said to me, “Where do you live?”
Ans. Indirect: He asked me where I lived.
- “When did he arrive?” she asked me.
Ans. Indirect: She asked me when he had arrived.
