Working With the Text
1. What do the Qur’an and the traditions of the Prophet (PBUH) tell us about backbiting and scandal-mongering?
Ans. The Qur’an and the traditions of the Prophet (PBUH) condemn backbiting and scandalmongering. The Prophet Muhamad (PBUH) says that the person who indulges in backbiting is like a man who has eaten the flesh of his dead brother.
2. What do the Gita and the Bible tell us on backbiting?
Ans. The Gita and the Bible also denounce backbiting. The Gita says that the person who does not indulge in backbiting is a godly man whereas the Bible says that one who does not indulge in backbiting does not stumble in his speech is a perfect man.
3. What do the Granth Sahib and Lord Buddha tell us on backbiting?
Ans. The Guru Granth Sahib says that a backbiter or slanderer carries the burden of his own of his sins all his life. The Lord Buddha said that man should live a life based on the right speech.
4. Why did the servant of Rabbi Simeon bring tongues both times?
Ans. The servant of Rabbi Simeon brought tongues both times because according to the servant it is a tongue that can be both good or bad based on what the tongue speaks. There is nothing better than a tongue which speaks good and there is nothing worse than a tongue which speaks badly.
5. Why did Rabbi Simeon invite his disciples for a meal?
Ans. Rabbi Simeon invited his disciples for a meal because he wanted to teach them an important lesson. He wanted them to understand the virtues of speaking good and refrain from backbiting.
6. What according to you is the moral of the lesson?
Ans. The moral of the lesson is that we never indulge in backbiting and scandalmongering. We should think twice before speaking anything because words can be our friends as well as enemies.
7. How does our tongue do good or bad to others?
Ans. A good tongue pleases people and makes them happy, and a bad tongue offends them and hurts their feelings, which is a great sin in all religions.

Miming Adverbs
Formation of adverbs with -ly; (oral guesses).
Procedure: Select a manner adverb (e.g. slowly) and tell all the class but one what it is. The one who does not know gives a command to one of the others –for example:
Get up and turn around!
If the adverb chosen has been slowly, then the student will do the action slowly. If the guesser cannot yet identify the adverb, he or she will give another command to someone else and so on until the word is guessed or revealed.
Miming sentences with adverbs
Position of manner adverbs in the sentence (oral guessing, based on cue cards)
Materials: One set of cue cards with manner adverbs on them, another with short sentences describing actions that can be mimed -all based on vocabulary known to the class as in the box
Procedure: A student takes one adverb and one verb, and mimes the combination (e.g. catch a ball + lovingly). The others have to guess what was on the two cards, formulated in a grammatical sentence:
You are catching/you caught a ball lovingly!

Let’s talk
Backbiting is common among us. What do you think should be done to save ourselves from this evil? Form groups and discuss it in the class.
Ans. Backbiting is one of the very common evils in every society. There are so many people who have the habit of backbiting. Everyone criticises others in his absence. There may be some actions of a person which are not liked by others. Each person is different. One’s qualities may be different from the qualities of the other. It is better to avoid others’ errors. Try to overcome the errors done by others and forgive the concerned person. Avoid interrupting others’ matters. We can save ourselves from backbiting by avoiding criticising others.
Let’s Write
Backbiting is an evil which causes damage to our own self as well as society. Mention some other such evils and write about them in a paragraph.
Ans. Like backbiting, the dowry system, child marriage, and illiteracy are some of the other evils of society. To remove such evil one requires awareness and good moral education. There are some evils in us like jealousy, quarrelling over petty things, stealing, telling lies, backbiting, using abusive language etc that we can overcome by using our willpower.
The other evils are drug addiction, smoking, drinking etc. They only harm us financially and mentally destroying our health. Addiction to any of these evils is like a slow poison. It deteriorates the person physically, mentally and financially.
