Our Health Services Class 5th EVS Chapter Notes
Introduction
The chapter “Our Health Services” is about different health services which are present in our society. World Health Day is celebrated on the 7th of April every year. The basic health services in our society include First Aid Box, Primary Health Sub-Centre, Primary Health Centre, Hospitals etc.
First Aid Box
A first aid kit is a box, bag or pack that contains some items used for treating minor injuries including cuts, scrapes, burns, bruises, and sprains. There are also advanced first aid kits which include items necessary for survival, life-saving emergency supplies or convenience items like bug sting wipes or cold & flu medicines.
The top 10 absolute must-have medical supplies that every First Aid Kit has are:

- Tourniquet
- Roller Gauze
- 4×4 Gauze Pads
- Medical Tape
- Two Triangular Bandages

Primary Health Sub-Centre
The area has a population of about 5000 people have a Primary Health Sub-Centre. However, in hilly and far-flung areas this facility is even provided for a population of about 3000 people.
In every primary health sub-centre, there is one male and one female health worker. They look after health-related activities such as providing information regarding the health of mother and child, family planning, vaccination etc.
The workers in the Primary Health Sub-Centre play an important role in providing health education to the community. The health workers in Primary Health Sub-Centre are treated to give first aid and treat simple ailments.
Vaccination
Vaccination is a simple, safe, and effective way of protecting you against harmful diseases before you come into contact with them. It uses our body’s natural defence to build resistance to specific infections and makes your immune system stronger.
By Vaccination, children can be protected against diseases like whooping cough, diphtheria, tetanus, measles, etc. Polio Vaccination is done by oral vaccine drops.
Primary Health Centre
The Primary Health Centre has been opened in rural areas having a population of about 30,000. In hilly, tribal and backward areas, Primary Health Centres have been set up where the population is about 20,000.
The Primary Health Centre has a doctor, a nurse and a technician. There is also a small laboratory in the primary health centre. The urine, stool, sputum and blood of patients are tested in the laboratory to diagnose the diseases.
The Primary Health Centre treats the patients with their diseases. The Primary Health Centre also looks after the duties assigned to the primary health sub-centres. It also organizes eye camps and camps for patients suffering from tuberculosis and leprosy.
Community Health Centre
The Community Health Centres are opened in areas that have a population of around one lakh. The staff in a community health centre has a medical specialist, a nurse and other workers. All kinds of health programmes like vaccination, health camps, child health and welfare schemes are done in a Community Health Centre.
In cities and highly populated areas there are big hospitals that provide facilities like:
- Diagnosis and Treatment of all kinds of diseases.
- Ambulance services for patients.
- Beds for Patients.
What is a Mobile Van?
A mobile van is like a small hospital that moves on wheels. It is also the means of providing health services. Medical equipment and medicines for the treatment of patients are also available in mobile vans. A doctor also accompanies the mobile van.
Red Cross Society
It is a voluntary organisation that provides medical aid at the international level. There are branches of this organisation in all states of our country. Its main functions are:
- Working towards improving the health standards of the people, protecting them from diseases.
- Providing relief during natural calamities such as epidemics, earthquakes, floods, droughts, etc.
- Improving the maternal and child health care facilities.
Blood Bank
A blood bank is a place where the blood of all the different groups is stored and made available when required. All big hospitals have Blood Banks. In case of an emergency like an accident, major operation, or serious ailment, when we need blood, we can procure it from the Blood Banks.
Blood banks get blood from the blood donations of people. Children and old people are not permitted to donate blood. Similarly, weak and ill persons also cannot donate blood. Only a healthy person can donate blood.
