Introduction
- The chapter is designed to make the students of class 5 understand the super senses of animals.
- The senses that we use to see, hear, smell, taste and taste something are termed super senses.
- Animals also have super senses.

- Dogs mark their area by their urine or latrine.

- How did the ant know that the other ants were not from its group?
Ans. Animals also have different senses. They can see, hear, taste, smell and feel. Ants use their sense of smell to identify that the other ants were not from their group.
- How did the guard ant recognize this ant?
Ans. The guard ant uses their sense smelling to recognize this ant.

Drop some sugar, jaggery or anything sweet on the ground. Wait until the ants come there.
- How long did it take for the ants to come?
Ans. It took about 10-20 minutes for the ants to come and surround the dropped sweets.

Ans. A single ant came first and then it is followed by a group of ants.
- What did the ants do with the food?
Ans. The ants carried the food to their hole.
- Where do they go from there?
Ans. The ants went to their hole from there.
- Do they move in a line?
Ans. Yes, one ant follows the other and hence they move in a line.
Now carefully, without harming the ants, block their path for a while with a pencil.
- Now observe, how do the ants move?
Ans. After blocking their path, the ants climb up the pencil and move in a straight line.
- Now can you guess why the ants behaved like that when you blocked their path?
Ans. When the ants move, they leave a smell on the ground for the other ants to follow the smell to find their way. So, when their path was blocked the ants tried to keep their path by following the smell.
- Have you ever been troubled by mosquitoes? Just think, how do they know where you are?
Ans. Mosquitoes can find us by sensing the smell of our bodies. They also sense the smell of our feet and the heat of our bodies.
- Have you seen a dog sniffing here and there? What do you think it is trying to smell?
Ans. Yes, we have seen a dog sniffing here and there. The dog is trying to find out if any other dog has invaded his territory or not.

- In what ways do human beings make use of this special sense of smell of dogs?
Ans. Human beings make use of this special sense of smell of dogs to catch criminals, in search of explosives, recover stolen goods, etc.
- When do you find your sense of smell helpful to you? List some examples. Like – to know by its smell that food has gone bad or that something is burning.
Ans. The other examples in which our sense of smell is helpful to us are:

- To sense the smell of perfume, the fragrance of a flower.
- To smell if something is burning.
- Leakage of gas in the kitchen.
- Smelling the cooked food and ripe fruits.

Ans. When we feel something dirty, it smells bad for us. Similarly, Saima feels that Atif’s nappy is dirty, so she covered her nose. While in his own daughter’s case she didn’t feel that her nappy is dirty so she cleaned her potty happily
- How do you feel when you walk near a heap of garbage? Think of the children who spend the whole day picking things from such garbage.
Ans. When I pass by a heap of garbage, I feel a very bad smell forcing me to close my nose. Children who spend the whole day picking things from such garbage might not have the same feeling as mine, because they are used to it and are not offended by such smell anymore.
- Is a smell ‘good’ or ‘bad’ for everyone in the same way? Or does it depend on how each one feels about it?
Ans. No, the smell is not ‘good’ or ‘bad’ for everyone in the same way. It depends on how a person feels about the smell. But in some cases, a bad smell is bad for most people.

Ans. An owl is a bird that has eyes in front of its head.
- Write the names of some birds which have eyes on either side of the head. What is the size of their eyes as compared to the size of their head?
Ans. Birds having eyes on either side of the head are crow, pigeon, eagle, parrot, sparrow, bulbul etc. The size of their eyes is very small compared to the size of their head.

Ans. Yes, I could see my friend’s action now.

Ans. We can see at a wider area with both eyes open. Looking at things with both eyes is a lot easier than looking with one eye open.
- Now toss a small ball or a coin and try to catch it. Try this with both your eyes open. Then close one eye and try to catch it. When was it easier to catch?
Ans. With both the eyes open it is easier to catch the coin when tossed.
- Imagine how it would be to have your eyes in place of your ears? What would you be able to do then, which you cannot do now?
Ans. If our eyes were in place of ears then we could see things towards left or right without moving our neck which we cannot do now.
- Now can you guess from what distance can an eagle in the sky can see a roti on the ground?
Ans. An eagle has a very powerful sight. It can see a roti on the ground from a distance of 1.5 to 2-kilometre range.

- For this activity find a quiet place in your school. Tell one of your friends to stand at a short distance and ask him to say something softly. The rest of you should listen carefully. Then all of you put your hands behind your ears, as shown in the below picture. Let the same child say something again as softly as before. In which case was the sound sharper? Ask your friends too.

Ans. Yes, I can understand the sounds of some animals like dogs, cats, sheep, pigs, horses, cows, parrots etc. I can recognise them by just hearing their sounds.
- Do some animals understand your language? Which ones?
Ans. Yes, a few pet animals like dogs, cats, parrots, cows etc. can understand our language.

Q1. Just like birds and dolphins you can also make your language of sounds for giving messages. Remember you have to talk to your friends with only sounds and no words. How and when will you need to give an alarm call? For example, when the teacher is coming to the classroom!
Ans. To give out an alarm call to our friends when the teacher is coming to the classroom, we can use sounds like ting-tong, tak-tak hello kon, etc. where everyone can follow accordingly.

Ans. Yes, I have noticed that during the cold season we cannot see any lizards in the house because they might have moved to some warmer place to protect themselves or they might have hidden somewhere to escape the cold season.

Ans. The coloured part shows the sleeping time for lizards in winters.
- Given here is the sleeping time of some animals. Write below each picture for how many hours a day that animal sleeps.
Ans. Cow sleeps for 4 hours a day.
Python sleeps for 18 hours a day.
Giraffe sleeps for 2 hours a day.
A cat sleeps for 12 hours a day.
- When you see different animals, do you have any questions about them? Make a list of ten such questions.
Ans. Yes, when I see different animals, a few questions arise about them like:
- Why is this animal in a different colour?
- What do they eat?
- For how long do they sleep?
- Why donkeys do not have horns?
- Is it carnivores or herbivores?
- Does it lays eggs?
- Why cock cannot fly high in the sky?
- How do they communicate?
- Why is it in the forest and not at home?
- Why are the ears of the elephant are like fans?
- The tiger is one of the most alert animals. And yet, today tigers are in danger. What do you think are some of the dangers to tigers in the jungle?
Ans. There are several threats to the tigers living in the jungle. These are:
1) Threat is from the hunters who kill them for their skin.
2) Deforestation is another threat to the tigers which is reducing their living space.
3) Forest fires and poachers.
- Can human beings also be a threat to animals? How?
Ans. Yes, human beings are also a threat to animals. There is increased destruction of forests due to the increasing human population. This reduces the natural habitat for the animal. Mainly humans kill animals for their skin example, deers are killed for their skin, elephants for their tusks, rhinos for their horns, tigers for their skin. Snakes and crocodiles are also killed for their skin. etc.
